What you can also do is make a text clip where there is a clip needed. Since it’s a text clip, you can write notes to yourself. If you want to add color, you can add color to the font or even add the “red” matte clip under the text clip.

You will want to get comfortable with the Finder of your mac. This will help to know how FCP saves your data. Look for a folder that says Final Cut in your documents. This folder contains all the different files; autosave, render files, capture scratch, etc. Also, a good habit to do is just press apple+s after each edit you make.

August 9, 2006 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Using FCP 5.1 to watch something edited on FCP 4 has ruined everythingA couple of things. I think you are confusing a few things here. You mentioned “I realized that I left my other firewire over at my friend’s place and the one connected to my computer was via the USB port.” This would mean that this particular cable is not a firewire cable but rather a usb cable. Don’t exchange the words firewire with cable. Your comment of “the hd came with 4 diff. firewires” is that you actually have 4 different cables (1 being firewire, 1 being usb, and 2 other ones). The reason why you had dropped frames would seem that your external HD using the USB port runs slower. It could be because that it’s a USB 1.0 not a 2.0. But it is best to connect via Firewire. Your machine is best optimized using firewire for FCP.

April 18, 2005 at 6:07 am in reply to: Upgrade to Studio from earlier versions of FCP?Cheap? I would say you are simply being efficient. As for getting the dual 2.0, I was also thinking of getting that as well. I haven’t seen many used ones. Getting the refurb from Apple, I don’t think you save all that much. You will need to get more RAM if you want to maximize it’s potential. 8 slots, 8 GB of RAM can be placed in that puppy. I don’t know if you have Apple touring around there demo’ing stuff or if you have a Final Cut User Group but loaded with 8GB of RAM, the sucker is pretty sweet! I don’t regret switching at all!
funny you mentioned your weather- Actually the last time I went to Sydney and Perth, I became ill. But your weather is very similiar to ours except the air is so much more cleaner! I’m jealous.

Harley,
” What if you own FCP-HD, DVDSP3 and Motion1 individually… does that qualify for the Final Cut Studio upgrade price?”
Sorry to disappoint you. When I called the Apple Rep told me that the upgrade for $499 applies only if you purchased the Production Suite meaning that if you purchased them separately then you will have to do the $699 upgrade. Yeah bummer, I know.

Actually, I talked to a friend earlier today who saw FCP 4 on ebay.com for about $100 (US). That would definitely save you a bundle of money if you could find a copy of any version of FCP for a cheap price and then do an upgrade.
As for switching, there are a lot of advantages I have seen. The integration of the different applications is awesome. Being able to not have to render out a project but simply saving the project and importing the project from (ex. LiveType to FCP). Big plus on that is TIME! If you want to change something, you simply go back to the project and change it. The changes take place when you switch back to the other application. Obviously, for production, time is money. That’s just one of the added benefits of Final Cut Pro.
BTW- I switched from using Premiere and though it took a bit to get use to the layout and interface, it was well worth it.
Can’t wait to go back to Australia. Go Auzzies!

Mikael,
“Can I upgrade my educational version of Final Cut Pro?
No. Educational and Not-for-resale (NFR) versions do not qualify for upgrades.”Your right about not being able to upgrade if you only purchased Final Cut Pro. However, I just called Apple and was told that if you had purchased a Production Suite (academic) then you are eligible to get an upgrade (academic) to Final Cut Studio for $499.
Oddly, I couldn’t find this on the website but that’s what the Apple rep said over the phone.
