Upgrade to Studio from earlier versions of FCP?
Posted by Peter Corbett on April 18, 2005 at 1:10 amDoes anyone know what version of FCP you have to have to upgrade to FCP5 Studio. I think the price is $699?
Cheers,

A little note… if you are upgrading from just FCP then it’s $699 however if you purchased a Production Suite then its only $499 to upgrade. Here’s the link https://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9911Z/A

I haven’t actually got FCP. I’m still looking for a long-term replacement for my discreet edit system. At the moment I’m using Prmeiere Pro with Decklink SDI, but the new version of Final Cut has me interested. I was thinking of finding an early version of FCP on eBay and upgrading that way (if I go to Appleland)

Actually, I talked to a friend earlier today who saw FCP 4 on ebay.com for about $100 (US). That would definitely save you a bundle of money if you could find a copy of any version of FCP for a cheap price and then do an upgrade.
As for switching, there are a lot of advantages I have seen. The integration of the different applications is awesome. Being able to not have to render out a project but simply saving the project and importing the project from (ex. LiveType to FCP). Big plus on that is TIME! If you want to change something, you simply go back to the project and change it. The changes take place when you switch back to the other application. Obviously, for production, time is money. That’s just one of the added benefits of Final Cut Pro.
BTW- I switched from using Premiere and though it took a bit to get use to the layout and interface, it was well worth it.
Can’t wait to go back to Australia. Go Auzzies!

April 18, 2005 at 5:48 amThanks again George. I was also looking at getting a used Dual 2.00 G5. (I’m starting to sound cheap now!) But I’m hesitant to spend big bucks again. I just paid off my discreet system from ’97. I’m not sure if the 2.0 would have enough grunt for the new RT Extreme syuff, but I’ll continue snooping around.
Cheers again. PS I wouldn’t head Down Under for a while. We’re heading into a nasty winter.

April 18, 2005 at 6:07 amCheap? I would say you are simply being efficient. As for getting the dual 2.0, I was also thinking of getting that as well. I haven’t seen many used ones. Getting the refurb from Apple, I don’t think you save all that much. You will need to get more RAM if you want to maximize it’s potential. 8 slots, 8 GB of RAM can be placed in that puppy. I don’t know if you have Apple touring around there demo’ing stuff or if you have a Final Cut User Group but loaded with 8GB of RAM, the sucker is pretty sweet! I don’t regret switching at all!
funny you mentioned your weather- Actually the last time I went to Sydney and Perth, I became ill. But your weather is very similiar to ours except the air is so much more cleaner! I’m jealous.

April 18, 2005 at 7:37 amHaving just invested in three dual 2.5s what I’m hearing now about the reliability of the liquid cooling system has me worried.
Maybe, given the choice I would now opt for dual 2.0s as well at the moment.

I went from a Discreet Smoke and a Quantel Editbox to FCP 4.5 production suite and Adobe After Effects. I can tell you, from my experience, the FCP/AE combo is far more powerful (and faster) than the expensive Quantel and Discreet machines that I used and were only a small fraction of the price! I had the same concerns as you but those misgivings were unfounded.

April 18, 2005 at 12:09 pmThanks Richard. Did you find the workflow fluid and effective in long-form editing with FCP? Although I’m very happy with Premiere Pro’s plugin structure and integration with other Adobe apps, the ease of use (ala edit) is lacking.
