Is it possible to write little text messages to myself on the timeline in FCP 5? For instance, if I wanted to leave myself a note saying “Montage Here” or “Clipped Audio” how would I do that? I used to do that in th grfx track of M100, but now that I’m using FCP I’mm lost. These are very useful for thoughts that I don’t want to forget, but I don’t want to take care of right away.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Daniel,
There are a couple ways that I do this, hopefully someone will be able to add some more.
Usually if I’m missing a clip or need to change with a differnt clip later, then i will use the ‘matte’ & make the color hot pink or red, something that will stick out on a sequence-so when you’re viewing the sequence with the tumbnail on the clip, you’ll see the color. If I really need to write a note for the timeline, then i would use the ‘marker’ add write in the comment space. Then when you run across it in the sequence, you’ll see the note in your canvas when you have the ‘view overlays’ checked. Do keep in mind that if you edit your program down in time, it won’t shift the markers, so you’re notes may slide in timing, so beware.

    Good Luck,

What you can also do is make a text clip where there is a clip needed. Since it’s a text clip, you can write notes to yourself. If you want to add color, you can add color to the font or even add the “red” matte clip under the text clip.
