Did the test!…Not a lot has changed. We still have problems with the setting set to CBR 8,000,000l and Best setting 31.[this is in PAL]
Analyzing it, I see the black levels are still too high, ie not black, the image lacks contrast [possibly because of the reduced black level] and saturation is down.
Also I notice a slight jitter in pans, even slow ones, and people movement across screen is slightly jittery. Also an interlace flicker. The type you get when doing an NTSC / PAL conversion- you can actually notice the interlace lines on moving head tops and other objects. Yet all this has been done in the what seems to be correct PAL settings in Vegas and DVDA 3.

All scenes were colour corrected using Vegas 6d CC, Secondary CC, vectorscope and waveform. We see that the scopes are set to Studio 16-235. Our DVD’s are for screening on a TV, not computer screens so should we uncheck that box? I just did so and notice the blacks are now upped about 10%, from 0% when checked for 16-235 setting. After all we did do the CC for 16-235.[7.5 IRE is not checked as that’s for NTSC right?].

Another test. Rendered the same CC’d timeline to avi then to tape. The contrast on the tape to monitor [same as used for DVD to screen] shows better contrast [better blacks] and better colour saturation. So peeling back the layers, it appears i have a problem in the transfer from Vegas timeline to mpeg2 render or in the actual burn.

BTW, how valuable do you find the Colour Curves Fx plugin? I’ve just used it and it looks like a very efficient way of getting good results quickly.

    I’d appreciate your thoughts.

    Thx Mike

I will try that tomorrow morning and let you know how I go. Yes, you are right, there is a lot of space left over on a 4.7Gb disk so I’ll give the contant bit rate of 8million a go and the set the “Video Quality” slider to it’s highest setting of 31. Here’s hoping
    More soon

    Yes, a missprint…:( should be 6,000

OK I’ll bump up the minimum.

Are you getting great looking DVD’s from your original material?
Good colour saturation and sharpness of image.
    Thx

I have a Photo EX but I live in Indonesia so I suppose I get zero. BTW, on a forum a while back a supplier of bulk inks stated that when you add up what you can actually use from the Epson cartridges multiplied by the cost to get you a gallon of the stuff, it works out you are paying $4,500 per gallon! No wonder the printers are cheap. Lets make a killing on the ink they say.

    Thx for the reply donatello

are all your viewing monitors set up to a standard ( SMPTE color bars, color bars) ??
Yes. Also, when I view the DVD in a desktop for a tv in another room, same problem – flat images that are unsharp. Dissapointing believe me.

are the orginal tapes PAL ? Yes

are you creating the mepg in DVDA or Vegas ? Vegas/Main Concept

in Vegas when you “render as” then click on custom , what is the rendering quality under VIDEO PROJECT ( preview, good, best) ? Best

in Vegas when you render as MPEG 2 you are choosing DVDA PAL video stream not DVD PAL. DVDA PAL video stream.

I just tried capturing with Vegas 5d…no better- a big zero.
So maybe its the firewire card, or is it the mobo? The FWire cable’s ok.
What checks can I do on the card.
    Thx geoffjak

    Thx again Jeramy

With regard to RealPalyer, maybe that means I have to buy their software to render it out.
    Any clues?
    Cheers
