July 11, 2014 at 4:32 am in reply to: PMW EX3 Focus issue – doesn’t match previous forum threadsSame exact problem here. I was told I needed a new DPR-289A board. Looking like a 4 grand repair. For all intents and purposes it means the camera is bricked.
Any body find any other solutions?

Hello Kris,
Thank you for the prompt and to the point answer. Now I don’t have to spend a bunch of time digging for files that don’t exist. You have rescued my afternoon!!Best regards,
Geoff

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the great advice. I will implement the suggestions. This weekend the same Search and Rescue group is doing overnight, winter survival training, which I will also be shooting. It’ll be a great opportunity for a field test. -

November 29, 2012 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Compression for Film Fest, and I’m in trouble now!Hello Guys,
Just wanted to let you know how things turned out. I was able to put a reasonable file together, but they didn’t receive it in time, so the low res version went up on the screen. You can imagine my feelings when I (and the entire audience) saw all my footage appear as if it was shot on a cell phone.
I tried to follow the advice of sharing the blame, but it was tough to find a scapegoat in my one man operation. Oh well, live and learn I guess!!Once again, thanks for the help!!

November 28, 2012 at 3:39 pm in reply to: Compression for Film Fest, and I’m in trouble now!Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the help!! I wound up exporting to quick time H.264 and reduced the quality to “good” instead of “best”. Seemed to put out an acceptable product. Here is a little tip, we have a computer PHD on our staff and he filled me in on why I was having so much trouble transferring huge files to stick or card. Anything over 4 gig, will usually have to be split up, or your memory stick or card won’t swallow it in one bite. My file is now 2.5 gigs and manageable. I really need to spend some time learning compression though. Maybe I’ll wait until two hours before the next film festival!!Thanks,
Geoff

Thanks a lot man. I’ll look into spreading out the blame. I tried H.264, and will go with it if I have to. It looks pretty bad though. Thanks for the tip on the MPEG 4. I am going to give that a try!! I guess I’ll just have to suffer through whatever happens, and not use those free tickets to the filmfest!! -
Thanks Michael
This down conversion issue doesn’t seem to be as simple as I thought it would be. I will check out the hardware that you mentioned. Unfortunately, I am not sure what the capabilities are of the hardware at the station, so up till now it has been “trial and error”.
I also re-read my post, and didn’t want to come across as slamming Doug Jensen. His method seemed to work fine for him. It even gave him the flexibility to add simulated pans and zooms. I wish I could make it work for me.
I am going to be working with another station that edits all there stuff on final cut, so at least I will have their sequence settings. The problem is that all their cameras shoot in 4×3 SD, so the EX still gives me the issues of the down convert. If my business grows, I might consider a Nano Flash. I hear that they will allow me to record in SD. Anyone have any experience with these, are are they just hype? -
Thank you Bill, this is exactly what I am looking for.

Andrew,
Yeah, it’s funny. It glitches, even after it’s been rendered. There is a slight hesitation as the playhead rolls over the cut between the slow mo, or freeze frame clip, and the unmodified clip.
For example, I got some underwater footage of a spawning salmon rolling it’s eye backward and making eye contact with the camera. I want to run the clip at full speed until just before this happens, then slow the clip down and finally frame hold on the salmon looking at the camera. My intention is to hold for a second or two, then ramp back up to full speed. Everything seems to work okay until the playhead reaches the full speed clip. It pauses for a fraction of a second, just as the hitch I am talking about happens. I am wondering if it is a RAM problem. I am working with 4 gigs of ram, maybe it’s not enough.Geoff

Makes sense. How do I rectify this then? It’s really not possible to edit properly if I can’t preview what my product looks like.
