Not in the U.S. app store yet either.

Has Phillip changed his mind? Back in April he wrote, “We didn’t see any title generation or filters used. Boris announced today that they planned to support Final Cut Pro X, so hopefully that means that FXplug still exists in the app. Alternatively they could have opted to support Quartz Composer for effects without an FXplug wrapper, as they’re quite similar in some ways. Even if FXplug support continues, plug-ins will need to be compiled to 64 bit before they can run in Final Cut Pro X. Filmlight have also clarified that their NAB-announced Baselight plug-in for Final Cut Pro will work with Final Cut Pro 7 and X. Good hints that FXplug survives.”

I haven’t seen any comments on being able to use iMovie for assistants to ingest, organize, do the color, sound, audio and stabilizing during ingest functions as well as keyword footage and even assemble rough edits in preparation for an edit. Not aware of anything comparable in Adobe or Avid.

[Simon Ubsdell] “It does look very much from the pics as though this will be missing, along with OMF, AAF and EDL, for both import and export. Quite a big deal for a lot of us! “
couldn’t all that be done importing under the “File” selection?

Here’s my guess: Apple already knows how to make a professional editing app. So they’re making a new one. Might take them a few versions to get every feature anyone wants, but out of the gate I’m sure it will suit a majority of editors.
And instead of forcing everyone to buy the suite and have to pay for a lot of apps they don’t use, they decided to let each one stand on its own. So for those using Pro Tools, Resolve, After Effects, etc., they are spared wasting some bucks. And they smartly added several features previously requiring those apps INTO FCPX, making it less likely you’ll need to leave FCPX to do much of the work.
Fun to guess, eh?

My guess, as it can only be a guess as they haven’t said, everyone pays $299.

If all you’re using is DV or HDV, you don’t need much horsepower to edit. Any of those solutions will work. Best bang for your buck IMHO would be a used Macbook Pro (I prefer the 17 inch). Don’t worry about overheating. Don’t worry about esata. BTW, you can daisy chain firewire, so having only one port is not a deal breaker. One advantage to using the laptop is being able to use Quicktime Pro to record straight from the camera to a hard drive (only useful for static locations). And if you would like to make people think you have a good grasp of the English language, it’s “whether” not “weather”.

Here’s one workaround: Use HDV Split (free software Win only) to capture your clips as m2t files. Use MPEG Streamclip (also free both platforms) to open then convert these to Quicktime files using DNxHD compression which can be imported to a 1920×1080 23.976 project. While the conversion takes some time, you will not have to transcode the hdv clips when you go to make a quicktime reference file as they’re no longer hdv.
