I have had issues with a WD MyBook USB3 drive. It appears that its performance as measured by the Black Magic disk speed test software is dependent upon which of the four USB3 sockets on the late 2012 iMac it is connected to. Typically I get a write/read speed of around 80-90MBps, but when using the wrong USB socket this can drop to 20-30MBps. At one stage using an external USB3 hub helped, but I’m not sure that it is still so.

Craige, thanks for your suggestion, but I cannot see ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Layouts, so is it correct to assume this file has already been thrashed?

    Where are these files?

    Thanks in advance,

For broadcast use attention should be paid to newly adopted Qualis Audio CALM act in the US which is based on ITU R Recommendation BS1770-3 that prescribes the value for momentary, short term and integrated (programme) loudness range. Google CALM or ITU R 1770 or EBU Tech Specs 3341, 3342, 3343 and 3344 to get the full detail, but note that the target level is -23LUFS (equates to -23dBfs in old money) and it is recommended that for domestic listening programme loudness range should not exceed 15db around the target level and that any peak should not exceed -1dBLUFS (-1dBfs). A good document to view is EBU R128. Conformance to these specifications is a legal requirement for broadcasting in the USA and presently a recommendation in Europe, although likely to become a requirement there too.

Unfortunately FCP X does not include the appropriate software metering to make these measurements although I expect that they will eventually appear as they have already done so in Edius and probably in PP. Suitable metering is also available in Wavelab 8.

  • But will Apple support both CUDA and OpenCL? They might drop CUDA support in an attempt to sell more of their new incarnation.

  • I just wonder if the move to optimise FCPX for the new MacPro will mean, by virtue of the change to Open CL, that the nvidia CUDA performance boost presently provided in the current iMac will be lost.

What happens if you short the ring and tip connectors to ground (outer shielding of the lead) ?

What happens if you terminat the mic inputs with 200Ohm resistors?

Have you tried putting a ferrite ring around the mic lead, close to the input jack on the camera?

It could be an RF problem or the pre amp in the camera ‘hooting’ due to a high impedence input.

  • I would endorse Edius from Grass valley. Although it is a 32 bit application it has been my experiennce that it is a rock solid performer that copes with most all formats. Its real time performance equals or betters that of FCPX and it has some of the best colour tools available. The current version also incorporates the necessary tools to ensure that audio levels may be monitored in accordance with the latest loudness recommendations that are now being implemented by the broadcasters. The package includes DVD and Bluray burning software if that is important to you.

For what it is worth, I know that Edius is making significent inroads into the broadcasting environment.

I would suggest that you download the 30 day trial version, but note that it is Windows based, but it runs well under Boot Camp. Also, look at the various GV Edius tutorials – they will give you a good insight.

I might add that I use both FCPX and Edius and this is not an FCPX bashing posting.

    Geoff.
