I think Anime Studio Pro has something like AE’s puppet tool. Also, check out Lost Marble’s MoHo program. Though I think AE’s is more advanced than both.

Try doing a junk mask around the shorts and doing some color replacement. It’ll take awhile, but that’s the only way I can think of to get a more convincing mosaic.

Or you could try and get creative with the advanced lightning tool. It might actually work for the purpose you’re describing. You could generate an alpha from it, and then wipe it on.

If that’s what you want to do, it should work fine. Just make sure to convert the HDV footage to something that’ll play nice with AE before you import.

I’d go with a 3D app.
OR I’d shoot a spaghetti strand, and then roto a 3D stroke over it. That might work. But it might be too much of a hassle.

There’s a pretty useful script called Ease and Wizz. It’s not perfect, but it’s good. I’ve enjoyed using it. Here’s a link:

There’s a way around, if you are especially masochistic. I’m not sure on the specifics as I’ve never attempted it, but I have heard of it.
It involves copying the keyframe data into text-edit and then somehow pasting it into ae7. Again, I can’t say if this works – but it is an interesting theory.
But then again, it’s probably not worth the hassle.
