Toby,
Perhaps I’m confused (happens a lot lately), but I can’t even get the download. After entering the FCS serial number, and clicking the download button, I get the message that “it appears I’ve already downloaded the update”. But I have not.
So, it’s not a question of installing the update on the Mac, but rather I can’t even get the update in the first place.
Or, are you refering to something else I’m not understanding?
Thanks,
Gary

Thanks Jim, great idea, but I don’t use the Mac on the internet; don’t want to risk it. I use a PC for internet work, and transfer the downloaded files to the Mac on a CD. No internet on the Mac, thus no system update capability.
I have my Apple reseller contacting Apple today to see what gives.
Thanks,
Gary

Might work, but I don’t have the Mac hooked up to the internet. Have to do all my internet work on a PC, and transfer the updates to the mac with a CD. But thanks for the idea.

Sorry for the double post, I didn’t think the first one went through.

Walter,
I do my downloads on a PC that I use only for internet and nothing else; like you, I don’t use my Mac for internet.
I went to http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/download/, where you sign in with your ID and password, then it takes you to a page where you enter your serial number. That links you to the 5.1.1 download. I then save the download, copy it to a CD, and update my mac.
For giggles, I just tried it again, and got the message: “It appears you have already downloaded the update”. So, they are only allowing you to do it once. Sure glad I saved the update for future rebuilds.
Hope this helps,

The blurb looks like this may only deal with Intel based problems. Should we try it on a G5, dual 2.7? Walter, which one are you trying it on tomorrow?
Also, do we need to mess with the ProApps Runtime application support, or the Pro Apps updates on the new 5.1? (I’m just setting it up on a wiped clean disk, with 10.4.6, and QT 7.1).

Boogiesan,
Thanks for your reply.
Perhaps I didn’t make my question very clear: I’m trying to find out if anyone has found any necessary changes the versions of OS-X, QT etc that will make this 5.1 version as robust as the set-up I’m now using for 5.0.4 (OS-X 10.4.4, QT 7.0.3, the same as recomended by Jerry Hoffman in his article); once I get it, I’m stuck with it: won’t have older versions to re-install if necessary.
Maybe there hasn’t been enough time for this to be determined.
Thanks,
Gary

You can run uncompressed SD on a G-4, and HD if you have the Cinewave set-up. But for HD, CW appears to be the only answer, and it looks like CW is on its way out. The AJA Kona2 HD card will only work in a G-5 with PCI-X slots, and the Decklink HD cards will revert to SD operation in a G-4. Aurora’s HD card is not yet shipping.
I have the same dilema right now: I’d like to edit in HD (HDV or DVCProHD codecs), but it appears I cannot monitor my video on a broadcast quality monitor without one of these HD cards. In the case of HDV, both Sony’s and JVC’s decks will mirror the image sent out by Firewire to component out,(much like we drove our monitors with DV), but word is FCP5 will not mirror out through Firewire.
I’m open to any suggestions before I replace my trusty 1 Ghz dual G-4.
