    Bob,

That makes sense; I’ll give it a try. Since it is a hardware controlled raid, not striped by software in the computer, the computer sees it as one drive. But I think I can test each drive by removing the others (they are on sleds), or test them two at at time and by a process of elimination find the offender.

I have a sense, though, that it may be time for a new one. This unit wasn’t very fast from day one; oringinally had 125 GB drives, then I replaced them with 250’s with 8mb cache. Same speed. And these new drives only have a 150 hrs or so on them. It has dual power supplies, dual fans, and dual controllers. I once tried restriping it as RAID 0, only got a 12% increase in speed. The company that made it started out as Infotrend, later became Jems, then was bought out by RAID Inc. They no longer support this unit.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the info. I’ll get back on this.

I was afraid of that. When I look at the graph on the AJA system test, there are little short duration spikes that go way down. I’ve been looking at the average write speed.

As I indicated, this is an older unit, albiet with new drives and new UL4D SCSI card, worked great for SD and works great for AJA DVCProHD; I had hoped it would be good for at least one stream of ProRez. Guess not.

Just an additional note: my year & a half old G-Raid FW800 320GB raid0 tests at the same speed as the larger unit with AJA’s system test.

So, what might the reason for the double speed/half duration video play back, while the audio goes the full duration of the clip? Remember, I tested the clips in QT and it plays at normal speed and duration, just with the occasional jumpiness from the dropped frames.

Boy, you folks are as bad as me, working all night. I guess we love our work.

    Thanks for all your interest.

Not sure what you mean. I know it’s not like the newer units; It’s an older Jems unit with ATA drives, had it since 2002, that’s as fast as it’s ever been. Driven by an ATTO UL4D SCSI card, latest drivers. About the same speed as a G-Raid with two SATA drives.

But that should be fast enough for one, maybe two streams of ProRez HQ right? Around 27-30MB/s max?

I’ve read every manual, tried everything I can think of for two days.

    Thanks,

    Gary

  • Well, here’s what worked for me:

Worried the $499 upgrade might not work with the “upgrade” FCS, and not wanting to get stuck with the opened/unexhangable $499 box, I went back to the Apple Store last evening, exchanged for the $699 upgrade, did a clean install, entering both the FCS2 serial number, and when asked, the serial from my original purchase of FCP 3.0 full retail version.

Up and running, no problems. (Of course I still have FCS on the other internal drive to finish up an existing project).

I’ll begin testing ProRez & Color today and tommorrow; I’ll post what I find in a few days.

Thanks Walter, Dave, Zach and all the others for all the great input on this thread.

  • Wait a minute: Walter, were you doing a clean install with the upgrade version, or installing on top of FCS1?

Maybe the previous posters had the prior versions on their drives, and the 499 upgrade accepted them, without asking for original serial numbers.

Tim, Jeremy, Zach: were you just upgrading already installed versions?

    Gary

  • Wow, what a mess; I didn’t get a serial number with my crossgrade to 5.1; was told just to use the prior FCS serial.

The Apple websight, on the purchase FCS2 page, indicates the upgrades are for “commercial” versions, not the adacemic or not-for-resale versions; absolutely nothing I can find indicates the upgrade must be from a full retail version.

So the Apple store (70 mile drive) is holding the $699 version for me, but only for this evening, and will only exchange the software if the box isn’t opened. How the heck do I know if it will install any better than the $499 version might, which I have not opened?

I guess I’m just venting my frustration for Apple not making this clear.

    Thanks,

    Gary

  • I’ll chime in here with a similar question: I just purchased the $499 upgrade from FCS at the local Apple Store, but my FCS was an “upgrade” to my original FCP 3.0 “Retail” purchase.

This means I should exchange it for the $699 upgrade from FCP, right?

    Thanks,

    Gary

In a related issue, FCP is reporting dropped frames when I try to play back uncompressed HD from my USB floppy disc.

The coffee I spilled on the disk shouldn’t be the problem, because it was a mocha latte. The mocha provides the disk with a surge of extra speed.

I trashed the latte, but still have the problem. Must be living near Seattle.

  • Ah, so it was. I just keep learning about this here computer.

Thanks to all of you at AJA for all you do.

OT: it was nice to see you again at NAB Brian.
