If you are talking about capturing DV, no codec is used at all. It’s a straight file transfer. The wrapper is AVI Type II.

I should further clarify by saying that you MAY WELL be able to play back on a different device, but you shouldn’t be surprised if you cannot.

Instead of a tower, I find it more versitile to use individual external enclosures. That way, they are portable as well. I have 5 enclosures and about 18 drives in hot-swappable trays. It’s real easy to reconfigure what drives are hooked up to what computers at any given time.

USB2 is actually slightly faster than firewire. I switched the majority of my external enclosures to USB and often have 5 or 6 drives hooked up to my destop, or 3 or 4 hooked up to my laptop.

You should also consider using USB2 drives/enclosures.

Put the video clips on different tracks. Size and position them using track motion. You can also tun on track motin glow to use as a border. You can then use track motion keyframes to move the boxes containing the video around the screen.

In Project Properties, click on the Ruler tab. There you can set the time format to Measures and Beats as well as beats per minute, etc.
