How much are you willing to pay for each? What do you mean by “exactly to my specifications”? What kind of direction would you be sending along explicitly?

You go to File->Project Settings and the very first option will be a dropdown box that will allow you to change modes. These will be limited to what your setup can support, but if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, you should have the option of CUDA, OpenCL, and Software. On the Mac platform, I strongly recommend against CUDA. I have had nothing but weird bugs and issues with it, mostly because CUDA requires a driver on Mac and I notice it’s updated quite regularly, so I assume things are still being worked out.
If you happen to be on El Capitan, you’ll also have the option of Metal acceleration, which is new with macOS, but I would steer clear for now as it’s brand-spankin’ new (but will hopefully be the preferred option of choice come the next iteration).

I do this all the time in Premiere. Are you selecting the entire clip or the ends (with either a yellow or red bracket instead of the entire clip changing colors)?
[David Dean] “I only seem to be able to position the dissolve at the beginning or end of an audio clip, so if I want it to fade in, like in an FCP timeline, I have to extend the clip by the number of frames and then apply the dissolve at the first frame.”
That’s how Premiere works (I was unaware that FCP could do this actually), but you can turn on track keyframes and essentially do this, though not with a transition. If you open up the Audio track to show the controls (on the left side of your sequence), directly under the “A” of the word Audio is a button that will let you turn on track keyframes for Volume or Mute. Pick Volume and now you can fade in the audio without changing the size of the clip. However, I’m not sure if you mean FCP would pick up the previous audio on the clip even if it was trimmed? Because this will only fade the contents of the track, so if you don’t have any contents, it doesn’t really do anything.

Nope, you’re correct that Black Video is Premiere’s version of “filler” and “slug”. I tend to use these at the beginning and end of sequences (usually about half a second of black after a fade out because some players, like QuickTime, don’t go to the very end and stop before the fade fully finishes). I have been bitten by bugs using gaps as black slugs in the past, but that has been a long time since that has happened and I would not be afraid to just leave gaps as your slugs (i.e. a gap with music that starts up for a second or two before fading in your first clip as opposed to putting in a black video clip over that gap).

The best sequence is one that mirrors what your final output will be. Do you want to have a 4K master at the end or a 1080? You’re also going to have to figure out a frame rate. If you go 30p, you can simply toss out frames from the 1080p60 footage. If you go 60p, then frames will be doubled with the 4K clips. You don’t mention if the 60p is going to be full speed, or if your intention is to conform it to 30p anyway to get half-speed playback. One thing to keep in mind is that 60p is not supported on physical media save for 720p60 on the Blu-ray disc format, so if you have any inclination to go with 60p you’ll be limited by that spec.

What is the physical source of your footage (i.e. hard drive, RAID, SD card, etc.)? Is it just doing this on this single clip? Is this the source footage straight from the camera or has it been transcoded? Have you tried rebooting your machine? Windows 7, 8, or 10?

Amy, that is definitely odd, and definitely sounds like a bug. Probably the path being passed to QuickTime when you double-click has an issue. Unfortunately, this sounds like the kind of thing you’ll have to wait for a patch or Sierra to fix (assuming you are on El Cap?)

The original problem is that Premiere won’t import certain clips from an SD card full of clips. That is still an ongoing problem. The solution is to transcode them using Vegas, not using Premiere, like you suggested.

MP4 is a different container. The codec is the same, there wouldn’t be any differences unless the MP4 option gives you choices of higher bitrates, which, on the XA25, it does not.

According to IMDB, it was the Canon EOS C300 (I am assuming the Mark 1) and the Blackmagic Cinema Production 4K camera.
