[Rick Lang]Thank you for the additional information regarding the media and your equipment. Certainly would not find anything problematic with your equipment so that does narrow it down to procedural or some software bug.

What exactly would you have been able to determine from hardware specs alone that would have told you why his projects didn’t save?

[Bret Williams]Go try Premiere for a week. You’ll find it isn’t anything to get excited about. It’s trying to be FCP, but it’s not. I’m bewildered that the company that brings us photoshop and AE can’t make a better editor.

What are you referring to exactly?

[Rick Lang]It certainly would not mean Apple is abandoning the desktop

But it most certainly could mean that. Do you know what Apple’s roadmap is any better than anyone else?

Interesting. According to that Apple Insider article, Snow Leopard does not come with Rosetta by default, so that might mean that FCP7 may actually be okay under Lion. I didn’t install Rosetta and I was able to install FCS3 just fine on my 2011 Mac Book Pro.

And you really need a supported NVIDIA card for the best performance.

[Chris Kenny]As of today, as far as we know, Microsoft, with Windows 8, has more ambitious touch plans on the desktop than Apple.

Microsoft in no way has the same track record of breaking compatibility like Apple does. Of course, there’s always a first time, but Microsoft usually bends over backwards with Windows to make sure it can run older software.

I’m not against this idea, as long as Apple still sees a place for traditional computing. Having FCP X on your iPad to work with footage in a very basic form would be great, especially if it’s painless to translate some rough assemblies to the full desktop version.

However, if they expect touchscreen-only interfaces in the future, I will not be a part of that.

[Chris Kenny]So, in other words, your answer is “unfounded paranoia about Apple’s future actions”.

It’s not unfounded paranoia. One has to make guesses on what Apple might possibly see its future as considering how the company shrouds itself in silence and mystery.

I have been a Windows guy for all my life and just purchased my first MacBook Pro. I really like it, but if Apple decides their future is iOS only, then I have to decide whether I can work with an editor that relies on a touch interface and make an informed decision, instead of being stuck with expensive hardware that is no longer supported by the company.

    That’s not paranoia…that’s good business.
