[Al Kohout] “Will the quality of this concept be as good as straight component?”
No

Randy –
We’re installing a Pro cache 5 next week. No hands on experience yet. Here’s what I’ve learned from research.1. Do I need anything else other than the ProCache 5 drive/appliance, like a server (Mac Mini?), NAS device or Monitor for an interface?
You’ll need a network connection and a static IP address. The Pro Cache 5 has on board storage so you don’t need a NAS device.
2. if it I am accessing it via the ethernet, how fast could it be? As opposed to The Bru PE that uses a SAS card directly to my work station computer?
Transfer speed will be based on the speed of your network. Depends on the bandwidth and load of your current network. Real world experience? I’ll find out next week.
3. Can 2 work station share that same drive over the network at the same time?
Multiple workstations can have access to the appliance for archiving. With the single LTO drive in the Pro Cache I would expect that the archiving and restore process is restricted to one workstation at a time. If you had multiple LTO drives I would assume you could run multiple restores or archives going at the same time.
4. Are there any other hardware or software considerations that I need to budget and plan for if I make this purchase? I don’t like surprises. Are there any other gotchas?
I’m hoping not. I’m not a fan of surprises either.
A few weeks back someone (Bob Zelin?) requested that Cache post their manual online. They responded and it’s available here:
https://cache-a.com/manualform.php
It’s worth downloading to have a look at the archiving workflow, etc.
Also, talk to your reseller about getting a demo unit so you can take it for a test drive.

[Andrew McKee] “You need to master trim mode.”
+1Here’s a tute on the trim tool.

[Aaron Duprey] “I had a feeling that was my settings somehow — I’ve been carrying my Avid settings with me since 1998, back when I was on an AVBV system, and just importing and using those settings with each iteration of the software.”
My understanding is that the best practice is to rebuild your user settings from scratch. I came across this on the Avid boards when v5.0 was released.
Have you tried creating a new user to see if it makes a difference ?

[Carsten Orlt] “Put the interview into a secondary story line and edit your cut aways on the main storyline.”
This is counterintuitive.
Editorial is story telling. In describing the individual components of this story you would describe the interview footage as the “foundation” of the story. And the b-roll as the “support” of the story.
You’re suggesting that the foundation of the story belongs in a secondary story line and the support material belongs in the primary story line?
[Carsten Orlt] “I actually like the trackless world and even though I run into problems because I’m so damned used to tracks that I start the wrong way. “
It’s not that you started the wrong way, it’s that you started based on your intuition. It’s intuitive to think that the interview footage (the foundation) belongs on the primary story line. I would guess that anyone learning to use FCPX would follow the same approach.

Map Fade Effect to your keyboard and drive it around for awhile. You’ll see that it’s a lot faster than adding dissolves.

[Mark Whitney] “perhaps Media Composer isn’t Win7 supported”
Avid MC 5 and up runs on Windows 7. Regarding BMD, everyone will have to wait for the release of MC 6 to find out which BMD i/o is supported. Judging by what Avid did with Matrox and AJA I would guess that there will be one BMD i/o that Avid will support.
I’m guessing they’ll support the UltraStudio SDI or the UltraStudio Pro.

I went from a Sony BVE-900 to an ACE 25. I didn’t have any major problems switching editors.

can we rename this sub forum into “I hate Apple” forum so
I never go here again?”If you’re looking for a happy warm place that offers unrestricted praise for all things Apple you should hang out at the Apple store.

The discounts that Avid and Adobe are currently offerening aren’t going to last forever. I think a lot of people have picked up one of those packages. They’ll continue to cut on FCP7 until they’re up to speed on the new NLE. Are they switching or are they simply adding another NLE tool to their skill set?
[Gareth Randall] “Why not simply stay with FCP7 and see what happens to FCPX over the next year or so”
They could wait a decade, they’ll still never be able to bring a FCP7 project into FCPX.
