We just got done with the client cutting all the video into a time line. Dropped in a bunch of photos and scans too. Very rough and very raw…I’m going to make a few graphics and tweak the scans tomorrow…cut music into a few spots and that’s that.
Its ugly but these folks are thrilled that they will have anything for their business meeting. They want to dry run their presentation Friday and Fly to whereever for their meeting on Monday. Maybe tweak it some more after they get back for use in other locations…
I’ll do a test render in the morning to see what it will look like. Did not add the super sampling routine to the timeline yet.

I told them straight away about the problem…I just wasn’t sure what was the best course of action in the short run to get them out of the jam.

Hey Tim…
Not sure what’s going on with your video…but I saw that you’re in Cary. So am I. If you do any amount of editing you might be interested to not that I host a monthly Vegas Users Group in my shop in Cary. Maybe you can get some help there…we meet at Flicko’s Video Workshop on Maynard Road. Let me know if you want more details….

October 3, 2007 at 10:36 am in reply to: Ok so what I am I doing wrong in my career search…I realize this is not the correct forum but I had to tryI think you hit part of the answer in your question…NE Ohio. When I lost my job in 2004 I couldn’t get an interview in NE Ohio. AS soon as I started looking in a broader geographic area I started getting action. Manufacturing companies continue to close in the area and that shrinks the market for many business to business suppliers. Population continues to leave Ohio and Michigan as people look for other opportunities.
I’m sure they are still opportunities in NE Ohio…but not as plentiful as other booming regions.
On the positive note…continue to network and talk with anybody about your skills. My first job was with a company that did not have a video facility but wanted to start one as they expanded. So it was not a job I could have applied for if I wanted to…and that was in Youngstown in the late 70s and during that period Youngstown was like a ghost town.

I signed up to look at the catalog…I’m working on a photo montage for a 50th anniversary. I love their idea and I’m sure I could sell the licenses…so now I need to figure out how to work “Hoppin’ Hoes” into the anniversary show….

Lot of good advice on the business side so far. I agree with all of it. Also, there is a lot of competition in the medical information field. I spent about 25 years doing it…medical education, nurses education, staff training, patient education etc etc.
On the patient education side…Milner Fenwick is a major supplier. I haven’t checked with them in a long time but I’m sure they have a web site that you could look at to see what kinds of programs they offer. Patient education is a crowded field and there is a lot of competition there. Also, many pharmaceutical companies and device manufacturers offer material for very low prices or free (to consumers or providers) because they help to sell product.
Pharma companies and device companies also provide lots of medical programming to physicians and support people…also as a marketing effort. Some of these companies have huge budgets. In addition, many small medical education consulting firms exist to provide the same kinds of material..often after being jettisoned from or leaving large corporate or medical organizations.
Opportunities exist, especially as medical technologies and techniques advance…but sometimes you need to move quickly to meet these needs….Are you looking at medical eduction (for physicians/staff) or the patient education side?

This kind of makes me chuckle…’cause after reading his ad I would NEVER have considered him for a serious shoot. Just from the way the ad was presented….and being on CL.
Its a perception thing…if fact, I still wonder if its really the same guy…hard to believe.

Last week I saw a local ad on our local craigslist. “Why waste thousands of $$ on a video. I will shoot your event for $100 an hour. I have good video graph (sic) skills and a Sony HandyCam. Video is my hobby”.
I sent him/her an e-mail saying I often have a need for free-lance shooters. I’d like to see a sample reel…and hopefully for that amount of money she/he would at least have a basic 3-chip cam/tripod.
Too bad…no reply. I really would like to get some decent shooters on board that I could rely on….

I don’t really know anything about Full Sail so I can’t offer any opinion there. But I’m a proponent of getting an education. Some of the technical schools can get you up to speed quickly on technology but a college degree can help you understand the world we live in…cultures past and present…and the difference in their and they’re.
It may not seem like a big difference right now…but it might make sense to you once you try to find your fit in the business world. And make no mistake…video and motion graphics is big business.
Let me know if you want to stop in and visit…I’ve been in this business for 30 years…and I’m in Cary.
