I’m pretty sure the problem here is Adobe. We’re waiting on the 4.1 drivers to release. One of the key features of this update is better 3rd party hardware integration support.

We’re also hearing from our hardware vendors that Premiere Pro in general is working much better on the PC side then the Mac side right now, especially with regards to I/O hardware. Once again, the 4.1 release is supposed to resolve this.

Spoke to Adobe yesterday, good news is 4.1 is “any day now”.

Matrox has just announced a new product CompressHD that provides massive H.264 acceleration with excellent quality for just $495. It’s a PCIe card that works along with any exisitng I/O hardware. So now Mac users can easily and efficiently export H.264 files for blu-ray, flash, iPod etc.

CompressHD starts shipping in May. At that time Matrox will also be offering their full line of MXO2 products with a MAX option. For $400 more the CompressHD chips and technology are integrated into the MXO2 box. Now you can get H.264 encoding acceleration in the field with laptops as well!

I think you have to really look at what your real time-frame is for moving to 2K, and if you think you’ll be adding more workstations at that time. With the $1,495 MSRP price tag I have no doubt the KonaLHi will get the job done for you today and pay for itself in short order. You just don’t want to back yourself into a corner either.

You are looking to put cards into 3 workstations. Sometimes in situations like this we’ll suggest perhaps going with one Kona 3 and 2 of the LHi’s. This way if a 2K or higher opportunity comes your way, you’re not left on the outside looking in.

I’d also make sure that you think about your 2K future when making your storage decisions. Having one of your workstations equipped with Kona 3 and a more substantial storage solution may be a better long term plan. Then again in this economy, every penny counts.

    Just some thoughts.

  • KiPro is going to be HUGE! While the price tag may be high for some, if you can get it in your budget, the return on investment will be well worth it. You are going to save so much time – and time is MONEY!

We’ve been selling the FireStores for years, and customers like them, but one of the biggest complaints / requests we’ve been getting over the past year is why don’t they have a more professional unit that goes straight into ProRes or Avid DNxHD.

With the KiPro you get full ProRes in all it’s HD glory. While the unit isn’t small, Aja ws showing all kinds of different mounting solutions for it at NAB, and now that the world has seen it, I expect to see some clever folks come out with additional mounting solutions specifically for KiPro.

We’ve had tremendous success with our external blu-ray burner bundles

For blu-ray authoring onMac the only choice now is Premiere Pro CS3 or CS4. For burning Toast is the way to go.
