    Hi
I need a recommendation for a stand alone (as in not built in) blu ray burner. I have come across only one, LaCie for about $400. Anybody have working experience with one? thanks

You must be referring to an External Blu Ray burner. There are NO stand alone units that I know of.

I beg to differ, Steve. LaCie has made one for a long time now that is external. It lists for $449, so finding it for around $400 shouldn’t be tough.

    Yeah
for the same price I found one that is faster, and has a firewire 800 connection.

    Will probably go with this.

Videoguys.com has a bundle with the same Pioneer 203 drive, a USB enclosure and 5 Verbatim BR-Rs and a BD-R Rewritable for $300. I bought this and it works great. I don’t know that there would be any speed benefit with Firewire 400 or 800 when burning the current 4x media.

Steve’s not lying – we’d all buy standalone Blu-Ray recorders if they existed. Since they don’t, we are stuck with authoring drives hooked up to computers.

My bad… Been working too much lately.

You won’t see any standalone Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is a stepping stone for downloadable HD video which is now a reality with iTunes, albeit, not as good as Blu-Ray but that’s what the industry is moving towards.

This is a bit off topic, but am I the only one who thinks it’s going to suck when we all our movies are downloaded? Specifically because there won’t be any cool packaging. I’ve got some great records, DVDs and CDs that came with amazing packaging, and that’s all going to be a thing of the past when they move over to the download model. Oh well.

We’ve had tremendous success with our external blu-ray burner bundles

For blu-ray authoring onMac the only choice now is Premiere Pro CS3 or CS4. For burning Toast is the way to go.
