[Bart Harrison] “Does anyone know of a way to license the QuickTime DVCPro HD codec without buying multiple copies of Final Cut Pro ?”
How are you going to capture then Bart? IF you have V4.5 it is the same DVCPROHD codec so there is no reason to upgrade the capture only machines. ( and a tad safer in the short term)
and you are talking about a 6 camera Live shoot in HD and you are complaining about
$5K in software? — thats less than what the camera package rentals will be (probibly less than the lighting truck too)gary adcock

[Marco Solorio] Interesting predicament. I guess the purchase of QT Pro wouldn’t supply this as well. Hmmmm.
NO it does not ( at least yet) and a note for all of those asking about this
Phil Hodgetts posted this as part of the LAFCPUG newsletter yesterdaythis works like a charm and I want to thank Phil and Michael for including this to the masses

As most of you know Quicktime 7.0 is out, but installing it will disable
your QT 6 pro Key, thus taking away all the very cool -
[Jim Blokland] Questions: can I have a Decklink card installed on the same system as my Kona 2 card?
As it has been written before me -No-
You cannot use the Kona LS either, the only way to do this is using an IO as the capture device. you comments on latency are not vaild if you use the IO for capture and the K2 for playback. Also the FW latency on the Io will be less than the current 5 frames with the next release (for FCP5) as announced at NAB.
I too am with BoB on the comment about getting paid. Saving a “days” pay that may require more than that much time in trying to configure.

A few opinions on the HDV codec and the Z1 specifically:
– The color accuracy is much better than with DV. I have successfully done green-screen with good results. The tip is to capture uncompressed for any keying work.I am with Graeme on this, it is not better than DV, but my question will is are you using the HDV contnet as HD or SD. In the SD downconvert of this content that maight be true but certainly not in the HD content.
– Sound quality is excellent (at least on the Z1).
???? not on my system the HDV codec uses mpeg 1 layer 2 audio this is a 5:1{?} lossey compression for audio it is no where near as good DV’s 48k Aiff audio. Maybe the mike on the camera is better but not what is on the tape.– Since the codec works in a completely different way than the DV codec, the artifacting we all hate has been greatly reduced with HDV, but at the expense of increased potential of motion artifacts.
the HDV compression is taking that 1.5gigabit date stream (an HD standard that does not change because of HDV @ 1920x1080i x 29.97) and compressing it to an 11 micron tape head your talking about a 60:1 data compression (NOT IMAGE compression) when using the Native HDV codec at 25mbps.
One last thing Will, how are you dealing with HD when your Sig file does not list any HD hardware, the DL boards you list are just SD only. Viewing these files in
HD, on a real HD display might change your mind to some of the things you comment on.gary adcock

The HVX200 sounds nice and flexible, but until we see the pictures from it.
Same as the Varicam Graeme, Leica glass, I should b able to show some of the content from it at HDEXPO Midwest on May 17th
A note however the camera only does HD and the VFR capture to P2 cards –NOT to tape.
The tape mechanism in the camera is dv25 only (I believe that it is the same/ similar to the one in the DVX100a – but I am not sure)5:30P – 6:30P THE MAGIC TRIO – Using The Varicam, 1200A Deck With Fire Wire and Final Cut Pro HD

[Mike] “What can one do to minimize problems?
– redundancy; make backups; have spare drives
– always unmount/eject volumes beforew disconnecting drives
– always wait for drive to spin down completely before moving a drive to another computer
– keep backups disconnected from computers; especially during updates
– never update a system in the middle of a project
– keep area around drives clear of clutter to help drive cooling; if mounting drives in a confined space, be sure to provide auxiliary cooling; the internal fans or passive cooling will NOT help if drive is in a confined space “good pooints Mike!
Remember that drives by default come formatted for both platforms, if you are going to be using your FW drive for video on your mac, you really really need to reformat the drive {using apple’s disk utiltiy} from FAT 32 as it is shipped so that the directory structure can be recovered by the common disk utilities availabe for a mac.

[walter biscardi] So Final Touch HD will NOT run period on the nVidia Ultra 6800?
Final Touch will not installif you are not running the 9800xt or x800 cards, I have not bothered to swap out the x800 to see if it will run with the 6800, but my thinking is that it will not.

[Will MacNeil] Well the first thing I would verify is that the telecine was done at 24fps. This is very unusual. The standard for film offline in PAL is to transfer at 25fps and slow it down in the non-linear system. In Final Cut Pro this is called the 24@25 method.
Make sure on 2 things- that your 24fps is 23.98 if the Telcine was done at 24.0 fps
if you are @ 24.0 you have just doubled your Audio Post costs becuase the audio is most likely NOT goingto be at 48.048MHz so all of your mixes will now be off.Secondly you said it was transfered to beta but at PAL or NTSC – there should be no pulldown issues from a PAL Tape, Just the slip to 24, However there is no way to write 24fps to beta it would be 25fps or 29.97 –Cinema Tools also has the ability to getnerate a 24pEDL / cut List from 29.97 materials but doing a file > export > Converted EDL > 30 – 24

Note too that app’s like Silicon Color’s Final Touch REQUIRE very specific video cards to run
( that case being either the 9800XT or ATI X800 card) so the requirements of these new apps is going to force the issue of GPU processors for the newer apps.the x800 card runs the 30’in display and makes silicon color just scream!
