[Ken Pugh] “Any recommendations to the FCP timeline settings, and AJA? “
Use the 1080 25i settings and you should not have any issues with Downconversion.

[Mike Kahn] ” Is the Kona 3 different from the Kona LHi in terms of updates? Occasionally I will build a system with the LHi and I get a pop up window telling me to update the firmware. I can’t remember this ever happening with a Kona 3 set up.”
Correct it is.
The Kona 3 does not generate a Firmware upgrade notice, it is a totally manual update.
The LHI uses a different chipset/ process via FPGA that utilizes the firmware update warning.

[Mike Kahn] “I am using the kona 3 8.0 ndd drivers. I have trashed the preferences and that had not fixed the issues.”
did you manually update the firmware on the card?
to check, go to the Applications > Aja Utilities > Kona Firmware updater.

Mike
I am confused – are you editing in FCP and using Avid Unity for Storage?
What drivers are you running on the Kona 3?
What you describe sounds like FCP spazing out, not something with the Kona Card.
Dump all of your FCP prefs and reboot.
The easy way to test the board is to just open the Aja control panel to show only bars &tone.

Yeah Right….
I don’t do active shutter 3D. The scary part we are still trying to find out if this is actually really feasible.

[Bill Ravens] ” i would agree about the default values. However, my point is, that you CAN force 10-bit if you need it.”
Never in dispute, as I said it was the default. As for the 10bit workflow, that is pretty standard as long as you do not render when working with the original media, or you do not work with realtime effects, since the RTX engine in FCP and RT playback on MC Avids are limited to 8bit the second you add any effects or corrections, this is a function of realtime playback not really needing to be at a higher bit depth to maintain editing speed and functionality.
FCP can do 10bit also, just turn off any RT functions.

[Bill Ravens] “Could you please explain more about your statement that “(AMA defaults to 8bit DNX even from higher bit depth source}””
ProRes is 10bit (or better) by default for all 5 flavors, DnxHD only has 2-10bit variants and in my experience I have not ever seen an avid editing system default during a file conversion\ to anything other than an 8 bit variation of DNX without having to force the issue.
I think that staying with the MXF workflow from XDcam is more convenient on Avids if there is no need for 10bit for color correction or greenscreen, Since the XdcamHDs are mostly used in the “news” or “doc” style shooting there is usually no glaring need for the 10bit output.

[aaron shadwell] “Would XD cam footage perform better via AMA that ProRes? “
The Xdcam format is designed to work seamlessly in the avid workflow, ProRes is another matter, so yes the native Sony MXF files would be handled better/ easier/ faster by the AMA engine
Yes, MC5 and the AMA will correctly handle the PR files, but any effects, graphics or corrections will be rendered to DNX (AMA defaults to 8bit DNX even from higher bit depth sources)

[Anhtu Vu] “it’s quite simple, Smoke for Mac ONLY support SDI output NOT the analog component out.”
This is correct.
the current Smoke for Mac installs disable the Analog outputs on the Kona Card.gary adcock

It is called HDCP and it limits what can be recorded over the HDMI port and whether you made the disc or not the player is sending the HDCP call back to prevent recording.
HDMI was designed to prevent what you are trying to do.
