[Nigel Thompson] “but isnt scratch Lab for on-set dailies and VFX aid etc”

The core of the app is an integral part of Scratch 6, while the $5Kusd version is meant to be used for data management, it does function like the rest of Scratch does.

    “When is IBC anyway ?”

    2nd weekend of September. ( 8-12th?)

I will be there for my IBC 10 yr aniversary (while my wife will be home celebrating our 24th year of marrige)

[Nigel Thompson] “problem is Scratch is way more expensive (although i dont think the price is too bad)and it doesn’t use either BMD or AJA or any pro video card for that matter.”

Assimilate just released their LAB product that was announced at NAB. You need to wait til IBC next month to see what else is coming.

I think we will see lots of changes in the next couple of months.

[Chris Cottrell] “Looking to purchase an ARRI Lens test projector. Any leads?”

Arri does not make a lens projector.

Most Rental houses (and Arri) use the unit from Century Optics. (Schneider).

I was told that the 350W unit is better due to a fan/ vibration issue in the 500w version.

July 25, 2011 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Alexa ProRes 4444 to Avid to DPX – …?

[Martin Zaharinov] “, I did have to deliver a conformed DPX for whatever reason – any quick pointers on how to make that happen/get started?”

I would go with Nuke for the DPX creation. AE is not always reliable in outputting of DPX files.

have you looked into metafuse for the data handling,

[gary adcock] “One note on the Alexicc workflow- I have not ever been happy with the results, the releases always seem to be behind the camera software enough to be problematic for me. “

I apologize to Steve Shaw for my error here, LightIllisions makes some of the best LUT software available and my response poorly phrased and not correct nor my experiance with their products.

    I was trying to say:
One note on the Alexa LUT workflow- I have not ever been happy with the results, camera software releases always seem to be lacking and Arri’s LUT can be problematic if you are not matching the correct camera software version.

July 22, 2011 at 3:58 pm in reply to: Alexa ProRes 4444 to Avid to DPX – …?

[Martin Zaharinov] “3. Regardless of what software I will use for this – what do I need to get out of Avid? Just an EDL, the RAW footage handy and a reference .mov to proof or am I missing something?”

    Martin,

this is one of those times that you should be asking the people you are working with, most would prefer the camera original material over any conversion. Just remember to define what you want returned to you.

Most VFX house can handle anything you give them, so why add a layer of complexity to your project. Alexa footage as ProRes is fairly common.

Do not apply LUT’s to footage being given to someone else for VFX, ungraded footage allows them the most latitude, however DO give them a guideline of your final color to match VFX too.

One note on the Alexicc workflow- I have not ever been happy with the results, the releases always seem to be behind the camera software enough to be problematic for me.

FYI Alexa Camera LUTs are only supported starting with the V4 software release (I have been doing camera looks on Alexa for a NBC Episodic TV series all week)

[Jason Jenkins] “The GPU, Bob! It has a built in GPU; with CUDA!”

FYI – CUDA is Nvidia Specific GPU control

OpenCL, allows more than just Nvidia cards, it also allows the intel chipset that is used by the new laptops as well as the ATI cards.

July 19, 2011 at 5:32 pm in reply to: FCP X to Adobe — No Serial Control Either

[Jim Miller] “Could you expand your answer about your success with deck TC control? Is this done within Premiere or external software? Plugins?”

    Jim

The MXO/2 line needs to have 3rd party adaptor like Keyspan for USB Serial control if I remember correctly, this is due to the fact those devices do not function like a PCI card- the hardware card allow you to connect directly via 9pin for RS422 control

you then have to make sure that the proper drivers are installed to allow you to see the serial control via the PPro Capture interface.

You should ask in the Matrox and/ or PPro forums to make sure I got it correct.

July 17, 2011 at 10:23 pm in reply to: Baseband video out of FCPX? Ever?

[walter biscardi] “That sounds to me like you’re saying the soon to be released Lion is the missing link for many of our issues. So what timeframe should be all be working with then? “

There is a totally new OS dropping that will fundamentally change the nature of the platform. You yourself says it takes 6+months to make the conversion. WHY would anyone be planning this level of transition on an App only when the OS is fundamentally changing at the core. This is what you should be worried about, not wheter you use FCPX any longer

The bigger questions is are you going to be working on a MAC any longer, What happens if have to go to Windows to support your chosen NLE as a platform? Are you considering that, as that is how drastic the OS change that is coming.

Walter, its been slightly about 30 days, with a OS shake up around the corner that could potentially be more disruptive than the coversion from PPC to Intel for Mac Users and all you are worrying about is this one app.

I will state this again, FCPX is about moving it forward, I have not once ever called FCPX Professional, not for me and my situation. I have been working with all of the NLE’s so my transition will be shorter than most.

My FCS 3 suite under SL runs just fine right now, so I am waiting to see if I am forced to change NLE or Platform, but there are a number of options available.
