[James Cude] “Is the client aware that 3D as a format is fast falling out of fashion for all but the largest Hollywood and animated releases”

    Not entirely true.
3D is still used extensively for Medicine, Forensics and Scientific applications.

“[Bryce Douglass] “all my externals are USB””

the easier way it to look at the connectors. USB3 uses 2 different types of connectors that are NOT compatible with any other type of USB drives, While one end of the cable is a standard connection to your computer, the other one is very thin with a small indent in one side, while the second version looks a oversized and pregnant square USB 1 connection and is usually only found on desktop model drives due to the size.

[Dan Rayner] “do you think they’ll have issues if letterboxing is used for aesthetic purposes?”

With the way the spec was written, I would assume so.

Exception might be if you used a color other than black for it.

Note too that that also might refer to something called AFD ( auto file description) that tags horizontally compressed media like HDV and DVCProHD content to play in proper wide screen aspect ratio in HD.

just a guess with out reading thru all the specs.

[Dan Rayner] “The footage was shot in 1080p and delivery is required in 1080i FHA.”

That is an errant way to describe the image.

It should really be called full 16×9 or full 1.78 aspect.

They just want to avoid the black bars top and bottom that happen when people shoot with RED’s 2:1 aspect ratio

[Herb Sevush] “But the precise Codec is not my question, my question is whether it will ever be available in MXF as opposed to Quicktime.”

    Herb,

Can you please name a recording device that can produce this proprietary MXF file currently?

It is my understanding that the MXF version of the DNXHD is not optimized foe realtime acquisition, hence the OP1a variant that is used by most mfg’s

[Herb Sevush] ” If the KiPros could record DNx in an MXF wrapper I would go that way in a heartbeat”

Unfortunately that version of the DNX codec can only be recorded in realtime on an Avid Server for Broadcast.

It has to do with recording in-reatlime. The codec version you are talking about is computationally difficult to create within a device recording live. All the in-camera (even Arri) and external recorder options ( Aja, BMD, Atoms, Convergient Design) all use the OP1a version of the Avid codec as far as I know.

[Herb Sevush] “I was talking to an AJA rep and asked if it were possible to have KiPros be able to record in MXF instead of Qicktime as an option for those using Avid in post. He led me to believe this would happen in the future.”

Depends on which units. On the original KiPro the answer is a big NO.

On the later models ie: Mini, Rack or Quad units can record a compatible version of DNX ( OP1a ) in both HD and SD ( the only formats supported by DNX )

September 24, 2013 at 12:41 am in reply to: FCPX 24p PAL to 24p NTSC conversion

[Jeff Kirkland] “I wouldn’t expect there’d be any difference between PAL 24p and NTSC 24p on the 5D.”

you mean like the differences in color spaces? or that the PAL content would be flagged as offspeed, forcing issues with audio conforms and such?

0r are you referring to PAL 24p being 24.0 and NTSC 24p being 23.976?

    Johann

There is no such thing as 23.98 PAL. working that way will do nothing but cause trouble.

PAL is 25p and all of the tools you have can handle that frame rate for conversion to NTSC 23.98.

DO NOT shoot PAL at 23.98
    – you are correct it will be seen as offspeed at it cause many issues and problems shoot at the native frame rate and use the existing tools to mod the timebase from 25 to 23.98 or the reverse.
