FCPX 24p PAL to 24p NTSC conversion
Been searching threads hard – couldn’t find my particular dilema, or I’m too dumb to see it:
Footage improperly shot on 5D m3 in “PAL 1920 24p ALL I”.
Footage will be B cam of interview, to be edited with F55 shot in 1080p NTSC 23.98fpsNeed to convert “24p PAL” (which on Canon is probably 23.98 PAL, right?) to 23.98 NTSC to deliver to edit on avid.
I have FCPX and Compressor 4.I want to deliver quicktime .mov’s at best resolution.
I want producer and editor to get footage ‘as if’ it was shot NTSC 23.98fps (the way it should have been shot).Backup Audio was captured on recording device at 23.98.
A cam will prob be master track, and visual smart slate (set at 23.98) will be used to sync cams1. Do I need to do a standards conversion? My understanding is that PAL’s base time is 25fps, so when I chose 24fps, I was basically capturing “offspeed” footage on the camera (kind of like setting cam to ntsc, and choosing 60fps).
a. Is there a chance that since footage was shot 24p in PAL, it’ll come into edit much the same as if it was 23.98 in NTSC?
b. Or is it more like: even though the fps is set at 24 (which on a canon usually means 23.98), because it’s PAL, the base time is still 25, so a standard converstion is necessary for the two formats to edit together successfully?2. If I must do standard convert for it to dovetail with other camera seamlessly, What is best workflow (or where do I find best settings)?
I know I’m probably fantasizing, but when I bring the PAL footage into fcpX, (import>new event) it shows up as 23.98 – could it be that it will cut fine with the NTSC stuff?
3. TO CONVERT: Can I just use fcp or do I need fcp and compressor? I want it to be broadcast worthy.
I tried importing by choosing “custom event” 1080 23.98, and by choosing “set based on first video clip” In this workflow to change it from PAL to NTSC, I couldn’t find information that showed the original files as being in Pal.
4. Do I have to downconvert to SD and 720x, and then re-upconvert to 1080 in order to pull this off? I see custom import that can convert footage to PAL SD or NTSC SD, but they only offer 720×576 options.

There is no such thing as 23.98 PAL. working that way will do nothing but cause trouble.
PAL is 25p and all of the tools you have can handle that frame rate for conversion to NTSC 23.98.
DO NOT shoot PAL at 23.98
– you are correct it will be seen as offspeed at it cause many issues and problems shoot at the native frame rate and use the existing tools to mod the timebase from 25 to 23.98 or the reverse.gary adcock

Why do you suppose canon created a 24p option in PAL on their 5D mark3?
What is the difference between their 24P PAL and 24P NTFS (both 1080 all-I)?
Is there any chance 24P in PAL (from 5d) will cut with 24P NTFS from F55?
I found many discussions online that are claiming that since cams have gone HD, there’s very little (or no) difference between the two.I’m doing a test right now to see if time code slips if both are dropped in a 23.98 timeline.

PAL SD is 25 frames per second but HD can be shot 24, 25 or 50 although usually shot at 25/50 and delivered at 25. I wouldn’t expect there’d be any difference between PAL 24p and NTSC 24p on the 5D.

you mean like the differences in color spaces? or that the PAL content would be flagged as offspeed, forcing issues with audio conforms and such?
0r are you referring to PAL 24p being 24.0 and NTSC 24p being 23.976?

Colour spaces would be the same for HD. PAL is true 24fps but compressor should handle the conform to 23.976 without any issues. Depending in where the footage is ending up, you’d probable get away with FCPX handling the frame rate conversion internally.
