November 1, 2011 at 7:14 pm in reply to: Easy setup won’t change video playback

The change that isn’t taking place that I am referring to is the video and audio playback settings. If I start a project that’s using a video playback of 1080 60i and switch to an easy setup that has a playback of 720 60p, it won’t change from 1080 60i to 720 60p; I am forced to set it to 720p manually. I just noticed this after years of working with FCP and thought I remembered it doing this, but it has been awhile since I’ve worked on projects requiring me to change my easy setups back and forth often.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks

July 20, 2011 at 7:07 pm in reply to: Why the urgency to jump to Avid/Adobe RIGHT NOW?

I think the shock factor of FCP 7 being discontinued immediately made people worried about how they could get additional licenses when they need to expand. That sparked the mass desire, from a facility and freelancer’s standpoint, to switch to another NLE right away.

However, Apple has announced that they will continue providing licenses to clients who have purchased volume licenses in the past. This will allow places that rent out systems to continue to provide FCP 7 systems for those shows that want FCP.

So, if you get your FCP systems from a rental company, or are a facility with a previous volume license agreement, you can continue to use FCP and expand. If you are a small production company, don’t have a volume license agreement, and don’t have plans to expand, then you can continue to use the copy of FCP that you have been using.

If you want to stay current with industry trends then you should try to learn a new NLE right away. FCP will be around strong for another three years, but after that who knows. New camera formats and workflows will make it outdated. Why not try to learn a new NLE now? Especially with 50% off sales from Adobe and Avid.

[Andrew Wilson] “apple has qualified for FCPX…. FLIP, GoPRO, Contour!??”

Actually these cameras are used all the time on reality tv shows and should be supported.

I wanted to download the pro applications update 2010-2 (the update to 7.0.3) to have a back up, but when you click on the download button it re-directs you to the new FCP X page!

  • I was thinking the same thing. If you think of the sneak peak as a presentation of new features only and not an official release presentation then it all makes sense. I don’t think they realized how much their presentation would freak people out.

Also, as Larry Jordan pointed out, the purpose of this presentation was to get feedback and to see if we like it or hate it. He said the build of the software he saw at a private meeting in Cupertino two months ago was the same. I’m sure the feedback given in that meeting two months ago was that the traditional way of editing with a viewer/ canvas and with the traditional timeline is important to many users.

We’ll see how it looks like when it’s released.

  • After two days I feel much better about FCP X after learning that there is in-fact a traditional viewer / canvas. And also I heard that Apple will have a way to work in a traditional FCP timeline. I don’t have official sources for this, but it makes sense.

Yes, and what about EDLS that require track data? EDLs require a V1, V2. Maybe storylines ( as tracks are now apparently called) translate correctly into an EDL.

And absolutely – you need to be able to patch tracks in the timeline. Select tracks, solo-select tracks. That has to be in there, but I could not see anything in the timeline screenshots that indicated it was.

Hopefully there is a classic mode that you can switch the timeline too.

This is very confusing for me, too. I require seeing the clip’s audio in the timeline at all times. Visually, I like to see the audio under the incoming edit or visa-versa (j-cuts and L-cuts). The demo showed that you can adjust things that are out of sync in one of those video/audio combo clips by going into a new window and adjusting it there. This is really a break from mode-free editing if you have to go into a separate window to do or see something.

And how does it work for audio on other tracks? It seems very convoluted.

What made FCP 1-7 great was the easy to use timeline. FCP copied Avid but made it much easier to move clips around, to trim in the timeline and was visually easy to look at. In the pressure to create something new and different, it seems Apple decided to re-invent the wheel.
The way the NLE works in the timeline is the heart of the program. If that changes, you’ve got a whole new program. From what I see, FCP X is a new application that is entirely different from the previous versions.

I wish they could’ve added all the new great features, change the GUI, the size of the buttons (things are too small in FCP classic) without messing with the timeline feel and functionality. I’m sure a lot of others feel the same way. This is what made FCP great to use.

Maybe FCP X will be just as good or even better to use when you sit down in front of it. Though why fix something that isn’t broke and substitute one good thing for another? Hopefully any editor who has used FCP 1-7 will be able to have the same great intuitive experience with FCP X.

Apple, hopefully there is a way to be able to work in the timeline in ‘classic mode’ for FCP X.

I’m sure Apple is listening – send feedback through their website if there is something that doesn’t appeal to you in FCP X.

Things to try if you haven’t already – Create a new project and try exporting there, create a new account on your Mac and launch the FCP project there. What version of FCP and QuickTime are you on? Maybe there is an incompatible combination.
