replying to my own post–I think I figured out a way to do it–
export as quicktime, reimport into 16:9 sequence–works!
I don’t know why, but that’s okay.

Thanks Ben, I’m still a little confused but getting there.

If I really wanted a sequence to act l ike an independent clip, I guess I WOULD have to export the sequence and reimport it as a quicktime then?

Is this true?

for now at least this is working-ish…

page 419 of the manual is what I had to do.

It’s still a little annoying, but I’m successfully nesting. I just can’t double-click or it opens the source sequence.

works ok tho.

my filter order? hmmm. I’ll look into this, don’t know offhand what you mean. Currently when I nest, I get a new sequence with the same clips, layered, in it. thanks, US

I’m officially giving up, and choosing to do each title manually in FCP. My reasoning–I have to change the font size and color manually (which entails changing three values PER color change) in text editor for every individual subtitle clip anyway, so it’s the same amount of trouble to just do it in FCP. Plus it doesn’t even seem to be bringing the changes when I re-import it back into FCP once I’ve modified the code in text editor. I can see how it might make sense if I were changing to font only, then I could just ‘replace’. But not in my case.

Unless, of course, there’s something I didn’t get, or some way to do it better….?

OK, I tried this method, and I think I’m doing everything right. But when I import the modified XML file into FCP and open the sequence, the changes I’ve made are not reflected. It looks just like it did before I exported it. I’m gonna keep messing with it, but any suggestions? Thanks very much.
