This is one of those things that should be easy, yet I can’t make it happen.

I have a 4:3 movie, video plus a few tracks of text over it. I want to export it as ‘pillarboxed’, meaning I want it to have black bars to the left and right of the movie, so that it can play on a widescreen monitor without getting stretched–make sense?

OK, I figure I just have to open a 16:9 sequence, drop in my 4:3 media, and naturally it will be pillarboxed on export. Not happening. The tracks are flashing between 4:3 and 16:9 in the canvas, even after render. When I export, same thing happens when I play back the exported file. Hmm.

    Any thoughts? thanks, US

replying to my own post–I think I figured out a way to do it–
export as quicktime, reimport into 16:9 sequence–works!
    I don’t know why, but that’s okay.

    Steve,

SD 4×3 video will only be stretched on a widescreen monitor if the monitor is set to stretch. If the monitor is set to normal it does exactly what you spent your time doing, i.e. displaying the 4×3 image in the middle of the screen.

    Hope this helps???

    Ha, ha, ha….

Export it to “Color”… change the project settings (to what you think it should be), render, sent back to FCP, and voila… it will be “wrong”….. 😉
