[Fred Verdad] “what are other people doing?”

Avoiding LaCie. That’s a CONSUMER hard drive company. I rely on CalDigit (HDOne, VR, VR Mini), G-Tech (G-Raids, G-Raid Mini) and OtherWorldComputing (OWC) Mercury Elite drives. Oh, and Glyph.

[Fred Verdad] “Do you think we need to do the E-sata thing or can we just use firewire?”

Firewire is OK for DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD. And one stream of ProRes. But if you want smooth playback of more than one stream (multiclipping, layering) of video, eSATA is better.

[Fred Verdad] “Is this speed difference really noticeable? If so, when? “

Yes! When editing…layering. Firewire will get you 1 stream of playback of ProRes. Meaning you’ll have to render more. Faster drives means more video streams.
