March 2, 2012 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Transcoding from AMA’d Canon h.264 to DnxHD different in MC6Yep makes sense and it looks like the default in MC6 is “leave as is” where the default in 5.5 was to compress to video levels (looked washed out like in QT). Or perhaps it was the perian QT component (which I now deleted). QT still looks a little lighter even without the perian component.
Once the clip has been transcoded to DnxHD, it looks like it’s too late to change the video levels (the data has been deleted). So I’m assuming that I should re-transcode all clips that were transcoded in 5.5, right?
It’s only 100 hours… :-0
Thanks for your help Michael!

Hey Michael,
Finally back in the edit (long shoot) and ready to tackle this issue again. So I’m taking your advice and I have transcoded the smaller AMA’d H.264 individually. Have them all lined up in a sequence, now what is the best approach to creating a long source reel from there? I know I can make a subclip from the sequence but would prefer to make a source file if possible (in FCP I would simply export as movie).
Thanks!
Frederic

That’s exactly it. The majority of my clips don’t even connect but the time codes are wrong.

That’s exactly what I was doing when I wrote this post… 😉

Whichever makes more sense really. Right now I have a DNxHD MXF based MC sequence. All the clips are the result of transcoding from AMA H.264 clips.

First off – thanks for all your help Michael!
I redid 40 hours of transcoding to DNxHD (Was MXF ProRes) from the AMA H.264 files specifically to be able to go to After Effects and DaVinci… now I’m discovering that AMA from the H.264 was the way to go in the first place… (sigh).
Forgive me for the novice question (very new to AVID) how do I take a sequence full of MXF DNxHD clips and conform it to the original H.264 files?
Thanks!

[Michael Phillips] “Why not just use the filename as source when conforming in DaVinci? Each file will be its own source. Works fine for me.
Where does one do that?
If you look at the TAPE column or the SOURCE FILE column what do you see?
Interesting. The TAPE is empty. The SOURCE FILE shows the original H.264 AMA file used to transcode the MXF (before it got clipped by consolidation)
If I remember correctly, the REEL is added to the ALE file which you need to import first then merge the files into that in order to see that value in the TAPE column. “
How do I do that?
Thank you!

I chose to consolidate the clips during the AAF creation process (it’s a short 2 min trailer) and all the clips in the media pool look perfect but they aren’t connected to the imported timeline with a couple exceptions.
