[Danielle DeLucia] “. We’ve been up and down this issue; trashing prefs, reinstalling Producer, even tried the Suite trial which had its own bugs.”

What kind of problems were you seeing with Suite? We do not work in HDV too often (we try to avoid this format), but the times we do use it it works fine with Suite 1.6.2. If you still have the bin window not showing up issue we should do a remote session so that I can have a look at your system. Just let me know.

So you are saying that your media drive does not show up on the Desktop? Is the media drive internal or external? If it is external, does it power up?

If you open “Disk Utility” (in the Applications->Utilities folder), can you see your media drive there? If yes and if it still does not mount, you probably should try running DiskWarrior on the drive; if you were digitizing while the power went down most likely the file structure of the drive is damaged; DiskWarrior most of the time can fix these problems.

Drag them to the desktop and see what happens. If the app still crashes you can move them back to the Library->QuickTime folder anyway.

Do you have installed a new quicktime codec? Anything unusual in your Library->QuickTime folder?

Do you get any signal at all? Do you see the output from the camera/deck in the viewer in Media 100 before digitizing, like in Playback? What kind of error message do you get when crashing?

[Tom Gillen] “Hi…I just upgraded to Media 100 suite1.5 from Producer 13.1. I didn’t see an option for uninstall so I installed the Suite software, but it doesn’t load up saying error 3,000. How can I uninstall Producer, if that is the problem? thanks.”

It probably is. If you still have the old Installer for Producer 13.1, this should contain the uninstaller. The newer versions do install a “Uninstaller” inside the Media 100 Folder.

[Andy Taplin] “but I’ve found that disk reliability is not the real danger (enterprise drives at least are now really reliable)”

That´s what I thought as well. Unless we ran into a batch of Seagate Enterprise/Server grade drives with a bad firmware, that nearly even killed our RAID6 system. We had 6 of 16 drives failing within a week… So I definitely would not take a chance there.

Sounds like a good way to go, as long as you are really doing your backups. Performance should be great. We used software RAIDs for some time and they performed well, until we decided to go to hardware RAID5 and RAID6 systems for safety reasons.

Hmmm, have you set the camera to output HDV over FireWire? Maybe it tries to downconvert to DV or something else. What framerate and format did you shoot in?

September 23, 2010 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Down convert

[Frank Cann] “Is this correct? – is there a better way?”

It depends on which hardware you are using. Most of the hardware boards (Kona & HDx for example) do have a hardware downconverter built in. So if you are going out to tape you could do the downconversion from your HD timeline in realtime to an SD SDI or component output.

If you are going to DVD or a file-based format, you could do what you described, or you could do the downconversion with a 3rd party app (like BitVice if you are going to DVD, Compressor if you are going to the web,…)
