If you use a deck with remote control and TC, like via FireWire or via RS422, you can digitize large amounts of material in an lower (offline) resolution, like 60k. After editing the finished timeline you can select everything in this timeline (CMD-A) and choose “Batch digitize selected” from the Media menu. Then change the image quality to something like 300k, and set trim handles to e.g. 1 second. The system will digitize only the needed material in your timeline from the original tapes again in the higher resolution, based on the TC information and reel numbers entered during the initial digitizing. This is the basic offline to online workflow in NLEs.
Btw. you should use HDR always, regardingless if you digitize at 60k, 300k or whatever. The other settings have some problems under OSX:

This is a kernel panic, which usually is only caused by bad haardware or software conflicts. Have you the newest firmware for your SCSI card? Do you have the correct Media 100 i version for your OS version?

If you have no serious deadline approaching you could give it a try. The worst case would be probably crashing or kernel panics, but reinstalling V8.1.1 will work without problems over your V8.2.1 installation. But I would guess that V8.2.1 should work nicely with your OS anyway. On the other hand upgrading to at least 10.2.8 is a good idea anyway, and it is easy to download the updates from Apple on another computer and to install them from a burned CD…

It may not be officially approved for 10.3.9 but works without any problems, at least in my experiences. And QuickTime 6.5.2 is also good to go. Others reported that it works nicely with 10.4.3 and QuickTime 7. The latest “official” configurations can be found in the CPG and in the V8.2.2 download location.
