Hey there.

Text you create in Potoshop is imported as a raster-based layer, just like photos and stuff.
You can’t animate it character by character via animation presets, and it’s not rasterized continously like vector-based layers are After Effects’ vector base text.
So when for example you’re scaling above 100%, you’re loosing resolution.

Fear not, however, because AE6.5 introduced a feature that a text layed-out in Photoshop can be converted to an After Effects text-layer.
You just need to have the same original typeface installed, but since you’re working from the same PC, that should be no problem.
But it can be if you’re working with older .psd files or created by someone else.

On a kind-of related note: I believe all text features are translated perfectly by After Effects, the same is not true for Photoshop’s layer effects (Drop shadows, bevels etc.) Some of those cannot be re-created in After effects..

Check out the “sequence layers command” if you set a large enough value for overlap you’ll get the staggered starting points you’re looking for.

Make sure you’re rendering to a codec that can embed alpha.

Specifically “Animation” is the most common one.

2 Totally different things:

AE Text presets are a way to animate individual characters/words/lines in a text:
their color, position, scale, rotation, opacity etc.

The LiveFonts are collections of quicktime movies: one for each character of the alphabet, that can each be for example a flower morphing to a letter, or a particle system that creates the shape of a digit etc.
All those quicktime movies are bundled together and used as if they were a regular font by the liveType application.

But it’s just a clever way of combining all those quicktime movies.
Actually if you look at the LiveFont in os X as a package (ctrl-click -> show package contents), you can copy those individual quicktimes and do some clever combining in AE yourselve 😎

Do a Cow search for “2.5D” the term for creating 3d illusion with still pictures.
There’s been quite some discussion about the techniques over the last year.
In essence you need different layers that are spaced apart in Z-space, and some camera movement to create the typical perspective parallax movement.

There are two buttons in the comp window that toggle on/off the visibility of masks and the safety areas.
I’m not sure if there’s a key-combination you did on accident that might make them dissapear.
But you should be able to bring them back using those.
