I run FCPX on a 2008 MP, not even fully loaded with RAM. I work on 26′ video documentaries, sometimes starting with tons of clips that live in the documentary event. Waveforms on, background rendering on. I feel sometimes FCPX gets sluggish after long hours, but not all of the times, and not during normal work. When it happens, I quit FCPX and restart the OS. But it never gets unresponsive up to the point it really is a problem, just a bit slow.

If you select the clip and go to the inspector window, under “audio”, you can turn the stereo pair into dual mono. The mono tracks output to both channels, so you’ll just need to adjust the level if you mute one. Or if you want to have audio tracks individually separated from video, so you can blade etc, after you have turned the stereo pair into dual mono, you can select the clip, then go to “break apart clip items”, then clip somewhere to deselect, click the audio only, and again “break apart clip items”.

Another strange thing, unless I’m missing something, is that all of my background music files were copied as aliases and not as real files, together with a few png’s after I duplicated project + used clips. They were into different Events, as I don’t care using the music browser, but they should have been copied as well as the other files onto the new “clips for xxx” event, I guess. I had to launch “organize event media” to see the actual files copied into the new event. This happened in all the project I wanted to archive using “duplicate project + used clips”. Archiving is pretty crucial to me as I think for all other editors/producers, I’d like to see an option to duplicate project + used clips excluding the transcoded HQ media together with the render files.

I had much the same problem archiving 5 finished projects using “duplicate project + used clips) and moving them to a sparse disk image after deleting the transcoded files. One of the projects contained two compound clips, and while with the other four the operation was almost smooth (there was a problem, really, but I don’t want to go O.T.), it caused a “not enough disk space” warning even if the event and the project folders were about 31 Gb and the s.d.i. size was about 100 Gb . When I tried to move them separately, the event invoked a compound clip problem with clips in other events even if I launched “organize event media” a couple of times (I don’t exactly remember the warning), so I left it at root level.

The video is funny. Well made, it made me laugh. Of course you could do the same starring another NLE of your choice. I can’t tell about corporate industries, but the more I use FCPX, the more I think it’s almost perfect for my line of work. I am even liking audio editing with the new audio waveforms and the handles at both edges that stay there even when you trim the clip’s edge shorter or longer, the stereo channels that play on both right and left after you switch to double mono and turn off one of the two, the graphic show of the waveforms that is proving to be very accurate, I can add a background sound long clip while in a zoomed in view knowing I will be able to blade it later and cut to measure without other audio clips being overlapped and forgotten… Well, I think I can edit faster and better now, so I’m pretty happy with FCPX. Now they can even change the name to iMovie pro, I’ll keep it 🙂

That’s the same problem I was mumbling about, as I need to open old FCP7 projects and export to tape from time to time. I keep a drive running Snow Leopard and FCS. When I am in need, I boot from that drive and work. Next generation Mac’s won’t likely have a FW, I wonder if FCPS will “see” an adaptor as a viable output. Most likely I won’t sell my 2008 Mac Pro and keep it somewhere in my office for another couple of years in case I upgrade to the next MacPro or iMac.
