  • With Micro HDMI cables the length matters. Check with a short length 3 feet or so to make sure it’s not a cable length issue.

The cable i use i have tested it and it transmits proper HDMI stream from Canon camera to a regular monitor. Do i need to try other cable? The issue arises when trying to transmit HDMI stream from Canon camera to UltraStudio device.

Set the camera HDMI output to 1080p and do not use the Auto mode. Make sure the frame rate is one of the supported rates of the Ultrastudio.

I guess that is the very issue with the Canon camera. When in clean HDMI output mode the camera does not let you chose manually the video stream bitrate/framerate settings, it is forcing a sort of hard to understand auto mode (https://az0000000.nimbusweb.me/box/attachment/9002536/cre0zzloanrfi5l1sox5/JgdmZE7Fmtx3MH4Y/screenshot-www.google.com-2023.07.04-21_17_43.png), so i have no idea whether the HDMI signal sent by Canon camera is NTSC or PAL and what resolution/bitrate/framerate.

Currently i have contacted Canon asking them some technical information on HDMI output signal when camera is in clean HDMI output mode.

  • Actually i was lucky to try and successfully install a 2015 version of drivers and Desktop Video software, so now i have a UltraStudio Express capture device available in vMix list, and thus can use the old professional SONY EX1 XLR line in inputs for audio.

    Thank you for assistance!

  • Thank you for clarifying reply Mads!

I was sticking to 1394 because my Canon camera has it as output, and i had no thoughts of getting an external capture controller, but connected camera directly to macbook via thunderbolt 2 instead.

What’s most important vMix detected my camera canon on the fly and I’ve been streaming this way for years, until i encountered the need to stream not only speech but live music and songs. That’s when i realized the canon camera mic as audio input is totally unacceptable for music.

My first thought was to try use a quite old but professional camera with XLR audio inputs, like SONY EX1, but my Windows 8.1 on a 2015 macbook pro bootcamp just does not detect is as HD video source, so can’t use it with vMix.

So the next thought is to buy an external capture device, and i borrowed an UltraStudio Express device by Blackmagic Design, and connected it via thunderbolt 2 cable to my macbook, but unfortunately the latest Desktop Video software which supposedly has the necessary drivers for UltraStudio Express device to be recognized by windows, is always giving an error upon installation.

Now i am looking for separate drivers to windows 8.1 or trying to understand which older version of Desktop Video software would install in windows 8.1 successfully. So far did not get much luck on vMix suport forums.

Regardless of what capture device I’ll pick as choice i assume it should have a thunderbolt output ,as does the UltraStudio Express device by Blackmagic Design, right? Or would the USB 3 speed on my macbook suffice for full HD live streaming needs?

  • Thanks for helping reply!

I’ll surely deeg into more info on suggested devices.

  • Thank you for reply. I had a thought like that while going through entire manual 🙂

Too bad, it was such a promising peiece of professional hardware.

    Thanks Laszlo,
Probably I’ll have to go through that test routine if no concrete diagnose can be established by anyone…
