  • Connecting Canon EOS M50 Mark II to Blackmagic UltraStudio Express

    Hello everyone!
I have run into a really harsh situation and very much need help from you video professionals.

I own a Blackmagic UltraStudio Express device that connects to Windows 8.1 (Boot Camp) on Macbook Pro 2015 via Thunderbolt 2 port.

Since my older video camera connected to UltraStudio Express via HDMI port is properly recognized in Blackmagic Media Express software, i was sure any other newer camera would also be easily recognized by UltraStudio Express via HDMI, so i bought a popular and highly suggested camera – Canon EOS M50 Mark II that has a micro HDMI clean output.

No matter what settings i tried UltraStudio Express does not display any video from Canon EOS M50 Mark II, only a black screen.

There is no issue with the micro HDMI to HDMI cable or Canon EOS M50 Mark II itself, because i connected it to a simple monitor via HDMI and video displays just fine.

Could it be something about the HDMI video signal Canon EOS M50 Mark II sends out that makes it incompatible with Blackmagic UltraStudio Express HDMI input?

Could it be that the problem is about Blackmagic Desktop Video Windows 10.3.5 version, and installing a newer version could help detect video signal from Canon EOS M50 Mark II?

    Desperately looking for an advice.

While we don’t have this configuration there are a couple things to check. With Micro HDMI cables the length matters. Check with a short length 3 feet or so to make sure it’s not a cable length issue. Set the camera HDMI output to 1080p and do not use the Auto mode. Make sure the frame rate is one of the supported rates of the Ultrastudio. I would not update drivers if it already works with other sources as the OS would not be supported. I hope this helps.

The cable i use i have tested it and it transmits proper HDMI stream from Canon camera to a regular monitor. Do i need to try other cable? The issue arises when trying to transmit HDMI stream from Canon camera to UltraStudio device.

I guess that is the very issue with the Canon camera. When in clean HDMI output mode the camera does not let you chose manually the video stream bitrate/framerate settings, it is forcing a sort of hard to understand auto mode (https://az0000000.nimbusweb.me/box/attachment/9002536/cre0zzloanrfi5l1sox5/JgdmZE7Fmtx3MH4Y/screenshot-www.google.com-2023.07.04-21_17_43.png), so i have no idea whether the HDMI signal sent by Canon camera is NTSC or PAL and what resolution/bitrate/framerate.

Currently i have contacted Canon asking them some technical information on HDMI output signal when camera is in clean HDMI output mode.
