I’ve tested my Shuttle with various motherboards and USB 3.0 chipsets.

Renesas: Has worked well on all motherboards I’ve tried it with. I’m currently using a PCIe card with a Renesas controller on a Rampage IV Formula and that works fine too.

ASMedia: Video passthrough sometimes works, but otherwise the Shuttle is incompatible with this controller.

Fresco Logic: Supposedly the holy grail of controllers for use with the Shuttle, but I couldn’t even get close to getting it to work. Windows can’t even detect the Shuttle properly.

Intel Z77 Native: As with Renesas, works perfectly, as least with the one motherboard I’ve tested it with (Asus P8Z77-V Pro).

    EAC.

I’ve used/tested the Intensity Shuttle on various different hardware. The main problem I came accross was when using any USB 3.0 controller other than the NEC/Renesas (I’ve even tried the Fresco Logic FL1009 and it failed miserably).

Also power saving technologies can prevent the Shuttle from working. On Intel P67, Z68 and X79, enhanced ‘C’ states (C3/C6/C7) must be disabled. On AMD 890/990FX, with a Phenom II CPU, C1E must be disabled, with an FX CPU it can be left enabled. Lastly, PCIe link power saving must be disabled in the Windows 7 power options.

Getting the Shuttle working on a Laptop is tricky. A USB 3.0 ExpressCard isn’t going to have enough bandwidth, BlackMagic’s own support page states: “ExpressCards for notebooks are not supported and will not work. The bandwidth they currently support is not suitable for Intensity Shuttle, UltraStudio Pro or Pocket UltraScope.”

Are you using the latest Renesas/NEC firmware and driver for the USB 3.0?

Also, the Windows power management change I mentioned is important. You can bypass it to test – set the power scheme to high performance.

Flickering /black frames is most likely down to power saving technologies sapping bandwidth.

To get the Shuttle working when I was using a Crosshair IV Formula, I had to disable C1E power saving in the BIOS (whilst leaving Cool n’ Quiet enabled), then in the Windows power settings ensure that PCIe link power saving is disabled (it is enabled by default).

    Hi Matt,

Yes, if your onboard USB 3.0 is ASMedia, you need a Renesas based card.

I have a generic Renesas based card plugged into my Asus Crosshair V Formula and it works perfectly with the Shuttle.

Avoid Fresco Logic FL1000 cards as they don’t have enough bandwidth.

Looking at your screenshot of device manager, it seems you have an ASMedia USB 3.0 controller. The Intensity Shuttle doesn’t work with this, you need to be using a Renesas or (if you can find one) a Fresco Logic FL1009 based controller.

I’ve seen a few reports of BSOD, or general crashes when trying to use the Shuttle with an ASMedia controller. When I tried it myself, I got a video passthrough/preview, but the capture window was black.
