Thanks Chris, now I can sleep a little better.

    Suggestion to Panasonic…

MAKE THE CLEANING TAPE A DIFFERENT COLOR! LIKE A BRIGHT RED CASE.

Ooops, I think I mis-read your post. You just want to buy one additional USB microphone and then run two USB mics into your laptop.

When you hookup one mic to a Mac, it only allows one input source at a time. Now, I have read that you can use some music software like Cubase that allows two USB mics at the same time. Do a search on that. (But it still requires purchasing a piece of SW)

    Good Luck!

    Simple…

Get one of these. 2 channel USB powered Mic Preamp. Perfect for location recording.

So, just to follow-up on the process of my shooting here and sending to the UK files of my shots.

I shot at 16:9 1080/50i on the HDX900. Digitized in at DVCPRoHD. Edited down the clips in FCP in HD. Then, exported selects at PAL DV Anamorphic. Worked great. All are happy. Whew!

OK, next question. They asked for DVCAM format files. What is considered PAL DVCAM? There is DV, DVCPro50 & DVCPro codecs. Not sure which format to digitize into. I’m assuming DVCPro is the best quality correct?

The client would like DVCAM 50i. It’s not artsy, so they don’t require the 24/25 fps look.

So, you guys think shoot with the camera set at 1080/50i, digitize into FCP at 1080/50i then drag it into a PAL DV timeline and resize?

Or… can I digitize it with my Kona3 card as PAL DV 50i? Will the Kona card do the conversion?

Sorry for so many questions, but I’ve never had to deal with PAL before.

I’ve been all over Japan and nothing to worry about. My AB chargers worked fine as did my HMI ballast on 100v. Shoot away!

    Jan,

How do you feel long form projects benefit from file based workflows?

Many of us don’t have time, staff or budgets to pay people to do the daily transfer of files. Maybe Hollywood can afford it, but many of us are fighting for every last dollar we can make on a project.

With the prices of quality camera’s dropping down every day, now everyone thinks they’re Spielberg! It really hurts us older, experienced professionals. I get outbid all the time and it’s always the same story… “You’re too expensive, we went with fill-in-the-blank-newbie” and his HDV camera.

The only saving grace to that is, they usually come back after he screws it up. Clients never learn.

Haha!!! U-matic is still alive and well! I had a client bring me two 3/4’s last week for an edit!!! I’m working on an historical piece for a corporation. Glad I still have my deck lying around.
