The specs look exactly the same on the HDX400 as my HDX900. I can’t imagine the footage would look any different. I bet NATGEO has minimums to keep out really low-end cameras. But, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the tech specs on every new camera that comes out. I can’t keep up. There’s new models coming out weekly! Anyway, I always say, 99% of the quality comes from the shooter anyway.

Good Luck, I hope you get the gig.

My experience is that exporting a QT Reference file is definitely faster than exporting directly from FCP. Plus, it frees up FCP while Compressor is working. Exporting directly from FCP locks you out of doing anything in FCP until Compressor is finished.

I’ve found it’s faster to make a QT Export by Reference file and take that into Compressor.

  • You must be talking about a newer Varicam like the HPX2700 and not the older F & H models. They only have a Firewire port and no USB ports.

I do know they want to run these video clips in PowerPoint presentations for their sales guys to use. They will run the program off CD Rom. Does that help. I’ve tried giving them very nice looking WMV files, they insist on AVI.

I’ve got very few client details. Just frame size 640×480. I’m editing in SD (720×486) 8-bit Uncompressed) Any suggestions how to export out of FCP, for example:

How would I export out a large file and a medium size file export?

  • It’s actually faster to export a QT Reference vs. a QT self-contained movie. Plus, it you export a reference, you can still work in FCP whereas a QT self-contained export, you have to wait until it finishes exporting.

Have you ever watched you footage and said; “I wish the highlights weren’t blown out” or I have to adjust the overall color on every shot”?
Then, yeah, it might be worth it to learn the camera. I love taking my footage to an edit house and the editor NOT have to adjust anything. Saves time and money, not mention, the footage just looks better on air with out blown-out highlights etc.

xmf are usually music MIDI files. Are you sure someone didn’t change the extension to that from .mfx Did you try editing the file name on one of the files to .mfx? Worth a try.
