    Help, I’m scared.

Big mistake… my assistant handed me a tape for my HDX900. It was a head-cleaner and not a blank. I ran it for 30 sec. (No warning light came on!!! What’s up with that. Aren’t there any confidence heads?

How much damage do you think I did? Everything still records fine, but did I just put 2 years of wear on the heads?

I’m nervous, should I take it in for service to have it checked out? 90% of my shooting is out-out-town, so I hate to take it now worrying about it.

What do you guys or the Panny Rep think?

I had an assistant do the same thing with my Varicam. I spoke with the Varicam tech at Panasonic LA and he told me not to worry. That was 2 years ago, and my camera has been error free. To prevent that from happening again, I labeled the cleaning tape on all sides and I keep it tucked away in a separate case. I keep mine for an emergency, but I have never encountered a need for it (knock on wood).

There is some debate among technicians about the usefulness of the cleaning tape. The DVCPRO HD tape transport is self cleaning and quite robust. Annual service goes a long way to maintaining reliability.

Thanks Chris, now I can sleep a little better.

    Suggestion to Panasonic…

MAKE THE CLEANING TAPE A DIFFERENT COLOR! LIKE A BRIGHT RED CASE.

In fairness it is actually written on the side of the cassette. You just need to keep it in a separate pocket of your camera bag.
