When I had a client that wanted this type of style, I created precomps of the illustrations that I had traced 3 or 4 times, letting the versions vary slightly. Put one illustration per frame in the precomp. Then create hold keyframes on that precomp in the bigger comp with the timewarp effect set to frame number, to let each version of the illustration be on screen for about 3 frames. Then add a loop expression, and you should have a pretty jittery drawing that you can animate in another comp.

    Hope that helps!

  • Oh, Ok. Everything is much clearer now. Thank you, everyone for posting.
Hopefully this thread will help someone else out in the future.

  • I usually just “Add to Render Queue”

  • But at the end of both you have a video file (or image sequence or audio file or whatever), right?

I hope this isn’t a stupid question, but I really want to understand.

  • forgive me, but that sounds like the same thing to me.

For anyone wondering about shortcuts – go to your help menu and look at shortcuts listed there.
    VERY useful stuff!

  • No, in fact, it was a project that I had rendered plenty of items before with absolutely no problems.
    Nothing out of the ordinary.

yeah, I saw that “closed” chaeckbox but for some reason it’s ghosted out. Do you know why? Or how I can un-ghost it?

    Thanks for the reply!

actually, you can change the color of just about anything there, except masks. That’s the first place I looked.
I know the process of changing the color is easy, but each second I spend on that is a second wasted.
That’s why I’d like an alternative.
Thank you for your time anyway, I appreciate it.

You can also use the text tool and type as much information as you’d like, then right click the layer name and select guide layer. This way you can leave the text right where it will be the most helpful to you, and you don’t have to worry about seeing it in your final output (guide layers do not render, even if the eye switch is left on in the comp).

    Hope that helps!
