If I’m editing in Final Cut Pro, once I’ve transcoded 1080p 24fps footage, is there a snowball’s chance in heck that a 5400 rpm drive will work, or do I need 7200?

In Photoshop? I usually use the marquee tool first. With that, you can select a fixed aspect ratio. When I have the marquee tool as I want it, then I use the Crop item in the menu, not the crop tool.

  • [Kevin Monahan] “Encode overnight.”

The only problem here is that when I’m in full-tilt production mode, I’m already using overnights for either capturing or editing to tape.

Is there a way to do both? Like, with AppleScript, if I know that the last thing I do before I leave is to get a two hour program onto tape, can I write something like “wait two and a half hours, then tell Final Cut Pro to close this file, yes to save the changes, then open this-here other file and get it encoding”?

  • Yeah, it seems that the issue isn’t so much render time per se, it’s productive time. So if it takes, say, nine hours but I can still use my G5 for other stuff, that’s a lot better than four hours during which my G5 is occupied.

But I would have to do drive swappin’, eh? There’s no way that I could have my load of drives connected to both machines, and switch off which projects are using which drives in software, is there?

At work I have a dual 2 GHz G5, but at home I have a Mac Mini with a single 1.25 GHz G4. FCP 4.5 on both machines, and I edit DV resolution. It’s not about to set any land speed records–I can definitely tell it’s slower if I’m paying attention to it. But if I’m just editing, I don’t notice.

What I do miss is a lot of things being realtime on the G5 that aren’t on the G4. No problem, really. I’m always editing from external drives and I walk them back and forth between office and home on occasion. If I edit something on the G4 that needs a lot of realtime effects, I just don’t render them. When I have the drives at work to lay off to tape, the beefier processor means no render’s necessary.

Maybe a similar semi “offline/online” edit situation would work for you?

I also use After Effects on the Mini. Renders aren’t great, but it’s fine to use. (Renders give me an excuse to take a lunch break, too.)

Yep, it did. Thanks! (I would have responded earlier, but it has definitely been one of THOSE days!)

    Thank you again.

About 40 minutes after you posted your reply, I started the Edit To Tape I’d been trying to do all day. It seemed fine getting started, but I had to leave the office right after that. We’ll see tomorrow morning how successful it indeed was… but I feel good about my odds. Thanks for the response!
