  • Sure, glad it’s working for you. BTW, I have a free dissolve transition pack on my site that you might like as well.

  • Sure, the easiest way would be to make a pre-comp at 1920×1080 and apply the band wipe preset to a solid and then scale the solid so the masks fit the frame. Since it’s a wider aspect than NTSC SD you’ll need to scale the width more than the height to fit correctly. Then turn on the continuous rasterization switch to keep it sharp.

Now you can use this pre-comp as an alpha matte for the layers you want to wipe on/off. It’s a little more clutter in the timeline but it’s actually more versatile because you can apply Flip or Flop to change the direction of the wipe.

The other option would be to apply the band wipe preset to a 1920×1080 layer and then manually resize and re-keyframe the masks. Just go past the last mask keyframe in the timeline then delete all of the keyframes, select all of the masks on the layer and hit Ctrl/Cmd + T to transform the masks to fit the frame (hold Ctrl/Cmd or Ctrl/Cmd + Shift to scale uniformly in one or both directions). Set a keyframe for the Mask Paths filling the frame and then move earlier in time, transform the masks again and drag the right side all the way over to the left so they are all out of frame on the left side. Then stagger the keyframes like they were in the original preset. Once you’re done you can select all of the masks and drag them to the Effects & Presets palette to make an animation preset.

If you don’t collapse transformations you should be able to apply Invert and have it work as expected.

If that won’t work, could you turn off “casts shadows” for the light and just use a drop shadow effect (or a copy of the layer) colored white?

  • Once again you’ve opened my eyes to the possibilities of Particle Playground. I can imagine a ton of potential uses for this effect alone. Thanks Roland!

Sorry man, I’m at a loss, not sure what the problem could be. The only thing I can think to do is to try uninstalling/re-installing quicktime and see if that does it.

Maybe you could try moving your video clips to a different location so that after effects can’t find them. Obviously, the project will open with a lot of missing footage, but if it doesn’t crash then you will know that it is the footage that is causing the problem.

Hey Gray, the first thing that comes to mind is that you may have some footage in your project that uses a codec that you don’t have installed on your computer. i recently ran into a similar problem with XDcam footage that would cause a crash instantly when I would try to import any clips that used that codec. If you are using the XDCam footage try installing the trial version of the “calibrated Q” decoder. The footage will have a watermark, but at least it won’t crash AE.

Roland, that is brilliant, and so simple at the same time. I never knew you could do that with particle playground. Although I admit I don’t use it much and tend to use Particular..

Yes, good point. Could you use a separate layer of particles that are moving slowly just for the Jell-O part of the scene? Maybe use a mask to isolate the portion of the screen where the Jell-O is? It wouldn’t match up perfectly of course, and it may also look weird that you’ve got particles moving very quickly going into the Jell-O and then suddenly moving slow through the Jell-O. I think they would probably need to slow down as they are entering the Jell-O for it to look realistic, but I’m not quite sure how to do that.

Is your client on a different platform, as in maybe a PC instead of a Mac? I work cross-platform a lot and have run into a lot of weird issues with fonts. Maybe you could have the designer send you the font that they used?
