I have never had the optical output work for me either. I have a MOTU interface that does not work as well as a Focusrite Octopre with adat card = no dice. I have NEVER heard of anyone using the optical outs that did not use a card. YMMV.

The Open GL problem is most likely Apples way of getting us to buy the next OS. Apple is only just getting started with Open GL- they are probably around 3 years behind Windows in development- but Windows has allready switched to DirectX for about 5 years (look at all the real time games). Apple has tried to make Quartz the visual language for the Mac. Oh well…I am SURE that Apple will have something for us to buy in time for MacWorld this coming January(a new OS or maybe the need to buy new hardware in order to run OpenGL compatible video cards, hey it’s only going to cost you around $4000), so don’t worry, take it like a man and enjoy the ride.

May 25, 2007 at 2:17 pm in reply to: Import motion spline/path from C4D or other 3D program? That would be knd of cool too – Illustrator paths. The whole 3D space thing(z-depth) is just really hard to control without using spline generators found in 3D programs. Ae is not the most intuitive when it comes to 3D space movement either, that’s why it is sooo nice to import motion paths… it’s all about z-depth and seting up the path.

May 25, 2007 at 1:57 am in reply to: Import motion spline/path from C4D or other 3D program? No, that is not what I mean. I mean a motion path to use with the new and improved 3D space in Apple Motion. What I like to do is create a spline primative in C4D then import the path to AE and either use that path for a camera fly-through or set a layer to follow the path or set Particular to follow the path or make a light follow the path or make a stroke follow the path or have Vegas go down the path or parent a layer to the path and have Shine use that layer for a travelling light show or, or, or……Can Motion import a spline path from C4D? Can anyone test this?

Here’s the deal.
Waveforms actually worked great prior to FCP Studio and the new Intel Macs. I swear to my non-denominational diety that I NEVER had the problems with waveform re-draws that I am having now. It is like Apple forgot how to make a program, oh wait…they bought FCP from another company. Well anyway, I am only using waveforms to line up dialog in a multicam shoot. My machine: Quad 3.0, 6GB ram, 4-500 GB hard drives. Is that enough machine to view waveforms? I recently sold a Dual 2.3 G5 that had no problems with waveforms. I also have a Dual 500 with the crappy Matrox product that displayed waveforms fine. Some people will say YMMV but I have one of the fastest cars on the lot and can’t drive it off the lot! Maybe Apple will let me buy something to fix this. Here’s to money!

Ever since switching to Intel, FCP has been a dog. Most of it is caused by audio waveform re-drawing. If you turn off audio waveforms that may help. God help you if you need to synch long form video to waveforms!

First off, shoot all the talent on green screen or blue screen. Make sure you have tracking points and camera information when you shoot.
Then learn a 3D package like Lightwave or XSI or Maya.
Now camera match your footage with your created 3D environments in a compositing package(AE, Fusion, Combustion etc…). Now you can de-saturate only the background or foreground, pull focus…whatever you want!
Simple stuff…….right!

That’s what I’m talking about. Doing it in the app will be a nightmare compared to importing spline paths from C4d like we can do in AE 6 and up. Drawing 3D paths in AE is a nightmare as well- but only if you need precise control. Doing it in 3D app is MUCH easier. We will find out soon.

I would like to get this straight too.
If two computers are being used, do the assets have to be on each one or does the server automagically use its own file?
Can PC Xeons be mixed with Mac Xeons? I suppose that a PC version would have to be purchased for client? -
Here is what I have gathered. Install ONLY in 4 or 8 slots filled, never 2 or 6! I have installed two more matching 1xGB sticks and the system is back to normal. As an example, I have a PSD title that blands on and then off screen, with 4 or 8 sticks of ram I get 17-19 seconds render time, with 2 or 6 I get 25 seconds render time. Enough said, the extra cost of the ram is only wirth it if you have multiple things open. Two gigs of 4×512 MB ram sticks should be good for DV and FCP use. Throw Motion into the mix and I would say 4GB minimum.
Thanks for the help guys.
