I know I need more memory but until now i’ve never had a problem with my final cut lagging or freezing. I have plenty of space on both hard drives and i’m working on a small project with only a few effects. What could be the problem and what could i do to help solve this?

Did you try trashing pref? Are you using a LOT of stills?

I’m making a slideshow so its nothing but stills. What prefs do i trash? Will that mess up anything i’ve already done?

go to your sequence > render all and sequence > render selection menus and make sure there’s a check mark by all the options, especially full. Once you have put a check mark by all options, hit option-r to render your whole timeline. This will render rt effects and free up some memory. Hit option-r every once in a while and keep your sequence rendered as you go along.

Make sure to resize your stills if they are high rez.

[Steve Eisen] “Make sure to resize your stills if they are high rez.”

This is great advice, even if it doesn’t solve your problem. Final Cut Pro WILL choke if you drop high resolution stills into the timeline. This happens even on fast multi-core Macs with lots of RAM. Not sure if it’s just a shortcoming of the FCP code, or if it happens with most editing software.

I appreciate all the advice. Looks like the high res. still are the problem. Thanks.

Ever since switching to Intel, FCP has been a dog. Most of it is caused by audio waveform re-drawing. If you turn off audio waveforms that may help. God help you if you need to synch long form video to waveforms!
