LC means “less cable” so you would have to supply your own XLR connecting cable. Otherwise they are exactly the same.

If 18 & 12 worked for you & your setup then use that. I always have a mixer to use to adjust any gain issues for feeding a camera or recorder.

For a bit more than $100 an Electrovoice RE-50 is a a very good choice. At around $100 the Shure SM-57 will do the job.

Based on experience I would set the tx & rx at about -20 and adjust the level at the recorder accordingly. Peaks on the recorder at -12 are fine.

A 3 pin XLR allows for a balanced signal path and also allows for 48 volt phantom power which all professional microphones require. The pin layout is: Pin 1/ground, Pin 2/positive signal, Pin 3/negative signal. Having a balanced feed helps to reduce/eliminate grounding issues and RF noise problems. Stereo & surround sound is created in post production. Dialog is always mono as it works better with subject placement in a shot.

I can address the FR2le as I have one. I was less that thrilled with internal mic preamps the one time I tested them but that didn’t bother me since I always feed any recorder at line level from a mixer, in my case a SD 442. That said the audio quality is excellent. It has no time code ability so you’ll have to slate every take for post syncing.

Contacting Sound Devices tech support might be a good place to start.

Tone level is one thing. Actual dialog level is another. Perhaps the sound guys are just recording the dialog level too low. Keeping the dialog level peaking at +10 at the mixer and -10 on the camera should solve your “low level” issues.
