Also make sure the AA batterys are all facing the right direction for polarity.

You have to go into the menu and set the power setting for the proper battery power. RTFM.

While the Fostex FR2LE is a very good unit, there is almost zero Fostex tech support for any Fostex pro audio product anymore.

PZM’s and kids running across the stage means lots of thumps transmitted by the stage floor to the mic’s. Overhead mic’s are a better choice.

For a 2 person sit down SxS interview a wider cardioid pattern mic placed on center will work very well. Even a tighter pattern hyper cardioid will do the job just fine. Personally I never understood the aversion to seeing a lav mic in a documentry interview situation.

I’ve got a FR2LE. No HP problems with mine unless you crank them wide open. Under normal levels they are more than adequate for monitoring. Try another unit if you can.

Add to the mic list the Sanken CS3e A very good sounding short shotgun somewhat similar to the 416 but with a bit more reach. The Rode NTG3 is also a good choice. To start a softie should work just fine. K-Tek has a good line of softies as does Rycote.

The tape out on a 442 is at -10 and based on a very unscientific comparison your tone seems to be at -20 or so.

The de facto camera reference level is tone at -20dbfs. Some cameras have a witness mark at what turns out to be -12 as there are no numerical indications of level.

In the pro-sumer camera market -12 is used as a reference to overcome any record system noise. 8db of headroom before digital zero is a bit dicey.
