I can vouch for the Tascam DR40 at $200. Has balanced min/line inputs although setting the levels is a bit strange with a rocker type switch but once set you can lock them in place. I only use mine with line level feeds from a mixer so I can’t comment on the mic pres.

It won’t get zapped I just wanted you to be aware of the possibilitys. Plug it in and see what the results are. As an FYI I tried an E6 & other lavs on my comp and they all worked just fine. Be sure to adjust the internal level setting for the mic input in the audio menu for max gain.

You’ll need the E6 to be wired with a matching plug to computer mic input. The computers mic input is going to be a 3.5 mm TRS (tip-ring-sleeve)3.0 volt connection but it will work with a TS (Tip-Sleeve plug)Remember if you fry the mic it’s about $500 out of your pocket. Better you should use the built in mic on the computer and work out the best working distance considering level and room ambience.

Lav mics do not use “phantom” power which is 48v. They use a power source of about 3volts which most consumer cameras provide at the 3.5mm mic in jack.

A small plastic food storage box available at your local supermarket should do the job. Or a cut to length section of PVC pipe from a hardware store….nah that’s too much like work, get the food tub.

Setting your reference level to -20 is a very good idea. It’s the accepted professional digital reference standard, peaks should be kept below -10 just to be safe Depending on what recorder your using sending audio to both tracks can be done. Best that you read the manual to find out how to do it.

Well a long time ago there was a system known as Fairchild Picsync that put a 14khz tone on the field recorder tape and it was used to sync the playback recorder to the mag dubber that made the audio mag track for editing. If your under 60yo you have no concept of what I’m talking about.

Setting one channel lower for safety went out with analog recorders. With digital zero being -20dbfs you have 20db of headroom way more than a padded analog channel could give you.

Think about it. There’s no live PA from the broadcast booth, only 2-3 commentators mics. A lot easier to control overall.
