While the Sennheiser mic input is a 3.5mm trs connector does not make it flimsy. As for it being unbalanced, you be surprised how many lavs are have unbalanced outputs. Just because the the tx input connector is a 5 pin TA5 as on the Lectro does not mean it’s wired balanced. The third wire in a 3 wire lav is for bias current that supplys voltage to power the lav.

Minimum starting point would be the Sennheiser G3 wireless system. About $600 a set for transmitter, camera mountable reciever & a Sennheiser omni lav mic included. Be sure to read the user manual carefully before using it on a job and practice with it so you won’t get any surprises when the director says “roll camera.”
P.S. the price is about the same wherever you buy the system. That said, I would look to purchase from a professional sound retailer as tech support is a very important part of your purchase investment. After purchase tech support is not something you’ll get from a box house.

Time code is a set of matching numbers on the camera (if it takes TC in) and the same numbers on the recorder. Usually in the professional world, the recorder generates the TC and it’s sent to a TC slate that the camera looks at when it rolls. The TC is on the recorder as a seperate item in the file.
In post the tc number at the begining of the shot is matched to the same number on the audio track and locked together so that shot is in lip sync. That process is repeated for each & every shot in the project. OTOH if your audio is going direct to the camera and that’s the only audio being recorded then TC is not required.

As you’ve found out the Audix while sounding wonderful has a lower output than alot of other condenser mics so you have to work it closer to the subject to get reasonable level. If you have a good pre-amp for the mic it should be fine. I have both the Audix & the Sennheiser MKH 50 which is my go to mic for every job that calls for a boom mic because it does so many things so well indoors & out. The Audix hypercardioid capsule has a wider pattern than the 50.

Sorry but I don’t have any examples of the 50 in action as I never keep files of the work I do. OTOH you’ve heard the 50 in action in movies & TV shows only you didn’t know it.

No, you’re misreading what I wrote. I said it does NOT have the reach or the sound of the MKH 50 but it does have about 80% of the sound of a Schoeps. Neither the Audix or the Schoeps has the reach or the sound of a 50 but that’s not a bad thing. It’s just different.

From personal experience with the mic I can say that it is a hidden gem. It sounds about 80% like the Schoeps 641 for 25% of the cost. Not even close to a Sennheiser MKH 50 in reach & sound. Given that the Audix is about $500 it’s a no brainer, you won’t regret it.

Easy to do. Cut the molded plug off about 2″ from the end of the cable. Strip the outer insulation from the short wire. Hook up a multimeter to the stripped wire and to the tip, if you get continuity then that wire in the long end goes to the tip of the new 3.5mm TRS plug. Do the same test, this time to the shield of the old plug with the untested conductor. Which ever one gives you continuuity to the shield goes to the shield of the new plug.

Even the $75,000+ Arri Alexa with it’s superb 24/48 line level only inputs has a clean but very low level HP output. Seperate professional recorders give you the option to record more than 2 tracks if needed.
