You’re definitely heading in the right direction. FCP does not recognize .m2t files, you have you use Log and Transfer to bring them in. Check out the second page of this PDF, from Sony’s HDV site.

And here is a video tutorial.

I mean theoretically that shouldn’t affect the quality of your video, but most people on here, myself included, advocate making a self-contained QT movie. Bring that movie into Compressor, apply the DVD settings, turn on Frame Controls and adjust the Resize filter to Best.

I was just in similar predicament except I had H.264 720p footage. After reading a lot of forums and what not, there doesn’t seem to be one solid workflow to put HD footage onto an SD DVD. There are methods that work for some people that don’t work for other people. Depends on what format your source footage is, how many effects, the type of content (sports versus interviews), etc.

Are you exporting a self-contained QT movie then dropping that into Compressor or in FCP going to File > Export > to Compressor?

Did you check the camera settings and memory card reader to make sure the down-conversion setting isn’t turned on?

If the memory recording unit is recording HDV then the file extension will be .m2t

If the file extension is.dv then it is recording SD to the memory card, which is why you’re timeline is SD. So no, you’re not looking at HD. You’re either recording 1080 60i or 1080 30p, it can’t be 1080i 30p. Check the menu settings of the Recording unit, as it is likely it is downconverting your video, which is why you’re editing SD. This is from one of Sony’s sites:

“In addition, when the built-in down-converter of the connected HDV camcorder is active, SD images can be recorded on a CF card while HD images are recorded to tape.
HD master tape is recorded and SD movie files are created at the same time.”

Hi Louise, You can use the DVD Best Quality 90 minutes setting. You have to drag up both the Dolby Digital setting and the MPEG-2 setting. The dolby digital is your audio and the MPEG-2 is your video.

Looks like you can just grab the mpg files and drag them to your desktop. You can then throw them in Compressor to blow them up and create your DVD files. It’s going to look like garbage…remember garbage in = garbage out.

You could ask him if he had the original tapes, then you could create the DVDs from the source material.

You can edit and view immediately. Depending on your settings, FCPX may transcode the clip in the background to ProRes.

  • You want to use ProRes like you’re already doing. You could also use ProRes LT if you have FCP 7. The larger file sizes are coming from the fact that ProRes has a much higher bit rate than the H.264’s that the 7D records to. The reason your transcoding the clips to ProRes is that ProRes is much easier to edit with. Additionally, it takes less work for the CPU to process and play your ProRes video than to play the H.264s.
