That’s odd. You’re absolutely sure the Limit Date Rate is checked on? Like it’s lit up, not greyed out? You’re hitting okay when you’re done changing the settings and not cancel? Or you’re not clicking match source settings before you hit okay?

At the bottom of the screenshot, where it says Bitrate Settings, check that box and type in 12,000 kbps. I would also set Key Frames every 24 frames.

  • Yes, this is what a majority of editors do when they complete an edit. You create what is called a “mezzanine” file; basically a file that is used to create your various versions. Most people, myself included, just call it exporting a master file. ProRes and DNxHD are the two codecs most often used to create the master mezzanine file.

  • Did you try Reset Background Processing in the File or Compressor menu? I forget which menu header it is under. Since the first few encodes are going fine, maybe it’s just the RAM getting clogged up and your machine needs to shut down for a bit?

Sounds like H.264 issues. Is your source footage H.264?

Telestream’s Episode is well regarded and used: https://www.telestream.net/episode/overview.htm

We have a Matrox CompressHD card which greatly speeds up encode times without loss in quality: https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/compresshd/
However you’re limited in the amount of parameters you can adjust.

Handbrake, the free encoder, uses x.264 and allows you to customize the parameters.

You can do it with the software you have. Here is a tutorial from Larry Jordan. The one point he doesn’t show is that you want to set your resize filter to Best. In Compressor 4 this is under the Frame Controls tab, next to the Encoder tab that Larry shows. Not sure where it is in Compressor 4.1

Not sure which OS, but he tried the Java Preferences. Looks like we might just try uninstall, reinstall. Thanks Bryson!

You could use Terminal and RSync at the end of each day. Only copies over what has changed. I’m not any sort of heavy terminal user, I just learned through googling.

    In terminal you type:

rsync -av –progress source drive destination drive

No worries Tim, thanks for the info!

I had heard briefly of the USB 3/LTO drives out of Japan but hadn’t actually read up on them yet.

    Thanks again.
