Using Ken Stone’s bit budget, if you wanted to get 180 minutes onto a standard 4.7GB DVD your average bit rate has to be 3.2 in Compressor. You can compress just a section of the video and see how it looks.

Stick with your codec the entire way through, whether it’s ProRes or DNxHD. Additionally, most workflows edit footage first, then color correct and add effects. Then encode to H264 for upload to YouTube as Craig says.

If you shot 50i and can deliver interlaced, then yes, edit 50i.

You’re exporting from FCP with the prores proxy footage? Or you’re reconnecting it back to the original then exporting?
If you’re exporting the ProRes Proxy then compressing that, that’s likely what’s causing the pixelation.

HD 1280×720 16:9 creates a video that is 1248×702, whereas 1280×720 HD creates a video that is truly 1280×720 HD. (See next to the Size button)

Not sure what the 1248×702 is for, if you google around there are a bunch of threads on it. In practical use, I think it’s fine to use either one.

I’ve had this occur to when I’m applying a setting even to just 5-10 clips, it seems to hang for a good 30 seconds and then it’ll catch up. I can’t imagine applying a setting to 175. I would think using a droplet for that amount of clips would be better.

Here are some video tutorials on the basics of compression. Larry is using Compressor v4.1 in one of the videos, but that doesn’t matter, the fundamentals are the same and addresses what Craig is saying.

Since you’re videos are just speakers you could try dropping the bitrate way down, something like 2 or 3 mbps. Judging by the fact that your 8mbps file is 5 gigs, a 2 or 3 mbps file should come out between 1 – 2 gigs. If you cut the resolution to 640×360 as Dave is suggesting, you could go down even lower.

The large increase in file size is expected. AVCHD is a heavily compressed codec, ProRes is not. Since you’re going from AVCHD to ProRes, you do not need to go to ProRes HQ, regular ProRes or ProRes LT will suffice and give you slightly smaller file sizes since their data rate isn’t as high.

As for why Log and Transfer is locking up, I’m not sure. Hopefully one of the other FCP users on here has a suggestion.
