Unfortunately not. Whether its upscaled by a player or you upscale via conversion and encode, its still SD in the end and won’t improve quality – MPEG 2 or H.264 would make any difference. although H.264 is a more efficient encoding codec, it wont make SD look any better. Throw a quart of water into a gallon container – you still have a quart of water in the end.
I had to upscale a 16×9 720×480 sequence one time to 1920×1080 for a BD project. The only reason was the client needed pop-up menus for the SD footage as well. Many BD titles you see with SD material are done this way as well. No quality gain though.

This question is asked probably 3x times a week. You should do a search next time.
1. First things first…you need to have a 720 x 576 16×9 Anamorphic uncompressed file to encode.
2. Once you have this, you need to download a good bitrate calculator to determine the best bitrate for your project based on time.
3. Encode in compressor with the correct aspect ratio (16×9) and filed dominance (if interlaced)
4. Also include a Dolby Digital AC3 instead of PCM – lower bandwidth usage.

You never want to export out H.264 for use in DVD. Its a highly compressed delivery codec, not a mastering one. Export out uncompressed and encode that.
There’s been too much hype about H.264. Its a very efficient format for certain purposes. It should NEVER be used within any Post Production workflow! Only for delivery (ie. the web, Blu Ray, ect)

Thats why bitrates are expressed in increments of time – as in mb per sec. What was your bitrate in Compressor. You need to keep in well under 9.8 mb/s I would make sure you’re doing thing correctly before spending money on Bitvice.
DVD is like baking…you need exact proportions or you will screw it up. Firts thing is to start with a 720×480 (4×3 or 16×9 Anamorphic) uncompressed SD file. This is NTSC of course. Next, determin the correct bitrate using a bitrate calculator (do a search for one), then encode.

Yeah…who has 50k laying around. There’s an open source encoder called x264 which Ive been testing against Cinevision and Cinemacraft. Beats or matches them both. In fact I believe Citerion is using it on some of their upcoming releases. Amazing the amount of work and time goes into open source tool from hobbyist.

Yeah…and everyone gave you advice from making an HD DVD to using Encore to buying Bruce’s book. Advice, i guess, you chose to ignore.
its fairly idiot proof so go through some of the tutorials and see if you did something wrong

Picking up Bruce’s book will definitely fix your issue.
Never had an issue myself…maybe you should hire someone to do this work?

Its possible that player wont play BD-R discs. Its the BD/HD DVD hybrid correct? how old is it?
